Title: ART-13 autotune mod
Post by: Ac8wp on August 13, 2020, 05:53:31 PM
Hello all,
I recently just picked up a art 13 and I herd about a mod for the auto-tune motor. I did some research and it seems it came from an issue of electric radio from December of 2003. Unfortunately they are out of stock of this issue.
Does anyone know how to preform this mod or have a scan of the article?
I definitely would like to add this so I can prolong the life of the motor.
I also have an RT/18 arc-1 that also has the same auto-tune mec so hopefully the mod will apply to that as well.

Dunno if this helps, but I have been running my ART-13 since 1989 and never did the mod , and never had had an autotune issue. I have lost one modulation transformer, and replaced it, and a final that went soft. And I did the 160M relay mod.

Good to know. Hopefully I never blow a mod transformer, but if I do at least I know I can attempt a rewind ( by attempt I mean if it's not sealed shut) or find another mod transformer.
I'm going to get a impedance reading when I re assemble it so a future rewind or replacement shouldn't be an issue. ( or so I hope )

The ART-13 mod transformer is hermetically sealed and somewhat pointless to rewind since they are rather plentiful as spare parts compared to any other mod transformer.  Interesting that one would fail, they are practically bulletproof.

The autotune mod involved a diode and as I remember was to reduce heat by only energizing the field when the motor is needed.  Otherwise the field sits there cooking away, energized all the time.  The interior of a bomber at 25,000 feet is not very warm so I guess it didn't matter.  The motor mod is just to have the motor run cooler.
