Post by: WB4YVO on November 14, 2019, 09:05:54 PM
All, I have a question about some capacitors in this thing  Its a Pyramid 4 UF 600 VDC Oil filled capacitor  Question  What type of oil is in this thing?  The SG was made in the 50's I think..

I want to open up and re stuff them..

But with oil in them..how do I proceed..   Hope its not PCB oil???

Any help

I wouldn't bother.   Oil caps generally don't go bad, if its doing its assigned duties, leave it alone.  Or, test it if you're in doubt.

Many Oil caps, and AC power line distribution transformers were manufactured with PCBs which are carcinogens.   Their use was curtailed in '76, and other oils have been used since.

If the cap tests good and doesn't leak, I'd leave it.

Probably PCB. I second leaving it alone if no evidence of problem.

There may be numbers on it that could lead to a national stock number in a search.

If you will rework it even though it seems OK, there are some articles on the web about handling the stuff, but a whole can being opened, going to be very messy.
