Title: Question abt callsigns
Post by: N3GTE on July 30, 2019, 06:21:31 PM
Used to be back there were 5 classification of licenses and they had there group of callsigns  2/3, 1/3, 2/2 1/2 or 2/1. Now days do the new techs and general get the 2/3 callsings?   Seems like I've been seeing a number of 2/3 generals and extras that appear to be later issused calls.

Just curious

Currently every new license issued, of any class, is a 2x3. After you get that you can apply for a vanity if you don't like what you got. Just had someone come in here and pass tech, general and extra and he got a 2x3 call.

Tnx for clearing that up. I thought it was odd that I haven't seen much of any diversity in these more resent ham calls. So does that mean a tech could get a 1X2 call under the vanity program?
Think I like it better the old way.

No, a Technician licensee cannot get a one-by-two callsign.  That group is reserved for Extras, and there exists a fierce competition for available callsigns when they come available two years after the previous holder goes out beyond the ionosphere.

The A-Triple_R-L page referenced above covers who can get what, as it is a simplified presentation of Part 97.
