last summer i had the pleasure of working at Alpine for a few days. it's a most excellent operation, and oozes radio history. i even had the privledge of a tour through the origional transmitter building which is now a museum of Armstrong's life and works. his personal boatanchor collection is displayed there, as well as his homebrew stuff, and parts of the origional W2XMN transmiter. security there is tight, and everything by appointment only. it's a shame that in these post 9-11-01 days it's not open to the public.

Say, that's the view from my bedroom window 50+ years ago!  Didn't have the microwave dishes then,  but there was a small airplane tangled in it for a while - probably 1953 or so.

Hi Sam,  got those Pacemakers going?

Hi Bill.  Thanks for asking.  Like much of my other gear, they sit patiently waiting for me (not that they have a choice).  I'm spending most of my operating time mobile lately and no room under the dash for a Pacemaker.

Didn't several NYC FM and TV stations move there after they lost the WTC?

You know, that's an oooold tower.  The frame is angle-iron, not tubing.  This is an issue for antenna installation.

I serviced paging transmitters at the Alpine tower location back in the mid-90s.  I got sent out there not realizing it was THAT tower... It was a delight to find that it was my destination!  I also saw the museum building, with an old FM transmitter in it.

Remarkable bit of history.

Armstrong loved to climb that tower.

Here he is fooling around atop WJZ in NYC.
