Title: FS: JOHNSON RANGER II (Slightly Modified !!) Post by: W1KSZ on November 22, 2018, 09:58:50 AM This poor fellow was the victim of a real hack job. The Function Switch AMfone - Dedicated to Amplitude Modulation on the Amateur Radio Bands
died (a common occurrence if you "Hot Switch" it). The previous owner then re-wired it so it works on AM (no CW). Then he drilled a big "honkin" hole in the front panel to fit a big, ugly toggle switch. So, I obtained a clean Function Switch, wired it so at least it turns on and patched the big, ugly hole with JB Weld. The Front Panel needs re-painting and re-stenciling. The PTT Mod has been done. I have also replaced the VFO Coupler insulator with a G-10 Epoxy Board 4 point insulator. Every Ranger I have seen has had the old Phenolic Insulator damaged or non-functioning. All Tubes were tested on a TV-7 Tube Tester and all bad tubes were replaced. A number of old Electrolytics were also replaced. It puts out about 48 Watts (measured on my Bird 4391 Digital Wattmeter). The Audio sounds fine. Basically you have a working Johnson Ranger II AM Transmitter. I leave the re-wiring of the Function Switch to the next owner, should he choose to do so, but it's not necessary if AM is your only Mode. I will include a rather large volume containing the Operating Manual, the Assembly Manual and everything I could find on the Web about modifications. This being a project Radio is definitely sold "As-Is". Asking price is $150, pick-up only in Vail. Shipping would cost a lot !! |
