Title: Ranger II AM Relay Questions
Post by: w3khg on September 17, 2018, 08:56:01 AM
This Ranger II had the PTT mod installed. When the Operate switch is in the "STBY" position and the mic's ptt is activated, in this case a D-104,  the mod's ptt relay can be heard. When the Operate switch is in the "Phone" position the Red Light is turned on but the relays, both ptt mod and the external dow-key antenna relay, do not energize UNTIL the D-104's ptt is activated. Is this normal? Should the dow-key antenna relay activate once the Operate switch is set to the "Phone" position regardless of the D-104's ptt switch?

The manual states on page 6 when in the "Phone" position 117VAC is applied to the ANT relay jack.

thanks

John,
The antenna relay should not operate when switched to the PHONE position when the PTT mod has been installed unless you are operating the D-104 PTT switch.
That would defeat the whole purpose of the PTT relay.
The PTT relay emulates the function switch (if the PTT mod is done correctly).
BTW, the circuit that is in the manual does not do this, it does not remove the screen voltage to the modulator tubes so the modulator is always running.
ALSO, the manual never tells you that the TUNE mode position no longer works after the mod has been done.
You have to either use a key or operate the PTT to see grid current in the TUNE mode.
