Title: Millennium Falcon is a Dodge
Post by: K6JEK on May 22, 2018, 01:29:52 AM
"The Millennium Falcon made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs” -- Han Solo.

Turns out he was driving a Dodge. I suppose it's obvious in retrospect that the Millennium Falcon is a MOPAR product. It just never occurred to me until my daughter saw this license plate at a screening of the new Star Wars movie at Industrial Light and Magic, the birthplace of the movies. It makes perfect sense.

"The Millennium Falcon made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs” -- Hans Solo.

Ya know, that statement has always baffled me.  How could such a hi-tech movie get it wrong?

A parsec is a unit of distance used in astronomy, equal to about 3.26 light years. One parsec corresponds to the distance at which the mean radius of the earth's orbit subtends an angle of one second of arc. It's not a time measurement.

So it's like saying, " I drove my GTO up the Pikes Peak run in less than 10 miles."

It doesn't make sense unless maybe Hans Solo was bragging about his ability to fly thru a wormhole approaching the speed of light to reduce the distance traveled, I dunno.

Agree except your example is wrong. It wouldn't be GTO, it would be Dodge Charger Daytona.

I think it's because Industrial Light & Magic is not in the business of proofreading scripts.  ::)

They are actually the special effects house. They don't care about the words.

several motifs are used throughout the range of Lucas flicks. They are classic.

THX1138 -name of a central character and designation of a storm trooper
SEN5421 -name of a central character and designation of a storm trooper
"What's wrong?" - a question asked by a prying authority figure in two movies.
"Nevermind"  - an answer to a prying authority figure in two movies.

A parsec may be a different unit in the galaxy far far away or a mistranslation by the storyteller or translating machine. Consider their energy conversion physics, not even close to the real world here. Both discussions have been raging on the internet since the internet was.

Perhaps the much questioned Kessel Run Record was an intentional and subtle practical joke to make people endlessly discuss it until the end of time.

I was able to dig out the truth on the galactic internet. The author seems to be an authority on what really happened... :-)

"The Kessel Run was one of the most heavily used smuggling routes in the Galactic Empire. Han Solo claimed that his Millennium Falcon "made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs". A parsec is a unit of distance, not time. Solo was not referring directly to his ship's speed when he made this claim. Instead, he was referring to the shorter route he was able to travel by skirting the nearby Maw black hole cluster, thus making the run in under the standard distance. By moving closer to the black holes, Solo managed to cut the distance down to about 11.5 parsecs. The smuggler BoShek actually beat Solo's record in his ship, Infinity, but without cargo to weigh him down. A few months later, Han Solo beat both his own and BoShek's records in a run he made with Luke Skywalker."

Here's proof from an actual map taken from Hans:

wow, glad that's finally settled!
Like Fermat's last theorem.. speculation then the truth hits like a wall of light!

Some say that Little GTO Blue is a FB color for receiver front panels.

Well.....that may be true, but the tu-tone green and copious amounts of chrome on this FB vehicle definitely bear a striking resemblance to those beautiful Heathkit Injuns of the early 60s....
