Title: Acquired an Elmac AF-67
Post by: ka1tdq on January 28, 2018, 11:28:49 PM
I won an eBay auction tonight for an Elmac AF-67.  Apparently only me and some other guy who was 105 years old were bidding on it, because it went for cheap and I was quicker at the re-bid using the phone app.

It's very clean and still all original.  It even still has the bias battery installed.  Here's the listing to see the pictures:

What are you going to do with it? I have a good one and a parts unit but I have never hooked them up to an antenna. I though about using it to drive the Desk KW but I would only use the RF. I rather like the rice box approach as your able to get exactly on a given frequency in a round table,  The audio would come from another source.

The AF68 seems a bit harder to find and off hand, other that I newer style cabinet and face plate, I think they are somewhat the same?

One thing I considered doing is to put a zener diode in place of the 22 volt battery. You may have to by pass it with a cap for audio reasons?

So if you need a part for something that is spent and you really need it on that one you have, let me know.

I'm setting up a 2nd operating position in the shack and I'm going to make a retro-50's station.  The transmitter will be paired with a tablet running HDSDR and the SoftRock Lite II for the 75 meter AM window.  I'm making every attempt to hide wires and make this operating position the show piece in the shack, hiding wires and all.

I will put a zener/cap in place of the battery.  I also need to re-cap the unit and build the power supply.  I have most of the parts and the rest are coming in from eBay, including the Jones plug for the transmitter.

I appreciate the offer on parts, but I think I'm all set unless something is blown like the mod transformer.  Everything else is manageable.

The piece looked clean on the eBay pictures, but in person, it's REALLY clean!

A 50s station should have some wire showing ;D

It's like on my radio website.  I wanted to put a link for something WWII-ish.  I could've gone with the Andrews sisters with this link:

That was extremely painful.  Similar to running your fingernails down a chalkboard.  Or, I could've gone with something with a little more flair, like this and did:

That's an AF-67 with a SoftRock!

Congrats on your ebay win. I got a AF-68 off ebay a couple of weeks ago and started
doing some research on it. Could not find a schematic of the mod so i made my own. I think
it's correct from what i have read.  http://amfone.net/Amforum/index.php?topic=43596.0

Yeah, you can't go wrong with a gear shift band changer.
