Title: HRO gear reduction drive question
Post by: W2VW on March 25, 2005, 09:29:51 PM
Can those old HRO gear reduction drives be mounted with the shafts in the vertical plane? I'm wearing my sneakers out running back and fourth trimming the tuner. Also, anyone want to part with a used cordless reversabile drill or 2 for a few bux?

Hi Dave,

I have rebuilt several of these units, wonderful construction.
Sure, you can mount them whichever way you wish.
Biggest thing I see on those is the grease dries out after 50+ years, need to clean with solvent and regrease.
Easy to clean if you run through the dishwasher.
If you do remove the front cover, be advised:

It only goes on one way, the arrow points up.

The gears inside are split and use a pair of springs to create preload and prevent backlash. The gearteeth on my units are offset 3 teeth each side.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Bruce. I was concerned if the lubricant would leak out, run down the shaft, get across a few turns of the tuner's inductor and burn the house down.

Only on Thursdays with a full moon Dave.

Seriously, the grease is quite thick, I use marine lithium grease in my units, the white stuff.

Over but not out.
