Title: Ashtabula Bill's 80th
Post by: k4kyv on March 25, 2005, 12:37:47 PM
I'm forwarding this e-mail I received:

Yep, it's "Ashtabula" Bill's.   The voice of W8VYZ will be 80 on the 8th of April.  Can you imagine how meaningful it would be for Bill to receive a Birthday card from you.  For those of you unfamiliar with this gentleman,  he's been a powerful AM advocate for many years.  Although he's been active on most HF bands, he presides daily on 14286 between 2100 & 2300 hrs taking a dinner break in between.  Bill maintains a legendary card file & is prepared to report date & time your first QSO with him. It's not uncommon to hear seasoned operators thank Bill for drawing them into ham radio or a career in communications and electronics after first hearing his voice on short wave as a youngster.  Perhaps you may be among some of these chaps.  These connections with the past are diminishing in number. How nice it is when we can pause to recognize them.

Please join me in honoring Ashtabula Bill with a Birthday card.  It should warm his heart & those of his immediate family.  You'll feel rewarded too with a good feeling.  Here's the address:

                              William C. Dolvin

                      3092 Plymouth Ridge Rd.

                         Ashtabula, OH 44004

One last request.  Join me & others on 14286 on the 8th of April during the operating hours above and we'll all wish Bill a Happy Birthday.  I'll ask his XYL Sylvia to make sure he gets on.

TNX OM's & 73,

w6pss

In my opinion, Bill has what I call a terrific shack. Plenty of black crackle stuff and lots of homebrew or modified WWII gear, etc. Besides, he's one of the nicest people you could meet on the radio!

Yesterday, I sent Bill a nice card. I also included an "Iron City Beer" pin I got when I was in Ohio about 7 years ago.

Happy Birthday, Bill.  Maybe I'll talk to you this summer.
