Title: A Passel of Collins FRT-24 carcasses
Post by: K6IC on July 06, 2017, 07:51:30 PM
As noted by W4BFS in the FS Topic here,   there are a number of Collins FRT 24s in Maine on e-bay:

Hope that the above Link works.

There was a guy selling one in perfect restored condition a few years ago and asking >$10K. Its a shame to see those in that condition but wow what a project it might make or a good pile of parts anyway.

Gary,  K6GLH,   had one that was fully-functional (the Plate Mod. AM version),  and in beautiful condition.   Believe it went to a chap in FL.   Have heard that it had been for sale recently  ...  dunno if it sold.   It was a very whizzy electro-mechanical marvel when it was moved from one preset to another.   Beautiful rig  --  4-1000 Plate Modulated by a pair of 4-400s.

Did notice that WBCQ  was associated with the listing ...

I think this is the one that went from Gary to Florida - it is a beauty.

Afaik, and this has been bandied about both in forum(s) and on-the-air, these are Alan H. Wiener's property,
and not 'HLR's. I believe that they were stored in a barn, but that the barn more or less disintegrated...

Imho, tough sell.

I think he'd do best if he spent an afternoon putting all the pieces that are appropriate and halfway
decent into a few racks and sold them, maybe brought the carcasses to NearFeast for almost free
(gas money)... speculating, and assuming that more or less all the parts/chassis still are there - but I
think I heard/read that some key pieces were scavenged earlier. Dunno.

Also no pix of the guts makes it impossible to evaluate it, given how far away they are, I'm not driving up
to see scrap metal if that's all that is left of it. But I dunno...

There isn't one complete unit, nor can you make one.

For one, all modulation xformers have been removed.

As to who gets the final money / who owns them, that's kind of a moot point.  One is the tech and one is the money, it appears to the outside world.

Some of the other things they have for sale, while expensive as shyte, are pretty cool to look at, too!
