Title: Does anyone run rack gear with an FT 897d?

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum , just curious if anyone uses an ft897
With rack gear to get that nice broadcast radio station audio.

I have the ft857. D model.  I have done this, virtually.

You can't beat the filters bandwidth.  You CAN change the carrier insertion frequency, which will move the pass and up or down, but you'll still be stuck with ssb bandwidth.

That being said, it DID really increase the loudness of my modulated signal. It DID really increase the intelligibility, the sound quality, everything, of the am signal (as well as fm and ssb).

Also, you'll need to do the negative voltage injection on the alc pin.  9 volt battery and a 1 Meg ohm pot.  Pot across the battery, wiper to alc pin.  Pos lead to the - side of the alc input, wiper to alc pin) Set the am power output to 100 (you can go higher, but increase imd), and I set my carrier at 50 watts.  Then, use the pot to set the carrier level you want.  This also (on mine) reduced the overshoot on Key.  Or my pep kit in the bird isn't fast enough to measure it now (doubtful???)

This gives wonderful modulation that has resulted in compliments similar to my ts 440....  Which I use the same audio chain on.  'not broadcast sound, but broadcast quality' is the gist.

A new W  I  D  E AM filter would bring it all the way around.  The same chain on my pwm gets broadcash reports.   That TX filter is just too good :-)
