Title: Broadcast Tower Base, Ummm... Questionable?
Post by: WBear2GCR on March 30, 2017, 10:28:20 PM

This from a FB group of BC techs/engineers...
...this tower was apparently "over guyed" (tensioned too much), and is still standing.
HA!

Makes me feel uneasy just looking at it. Can't really see, but the welds don't look to be compromised. To me, that base plate really looks undersized although I may have the wrong perspective.

It was rewelded, possibly a couple of times and painted over after the initial partial collapse..

Look at the weld bead overlaying off-square alignment.
Has probably stood this way for many years and 'lovingly,  kept painted.  ;D

Both straps clearly put on to keep away further leg bulging outwards.  Nuts don't seem to be threaded on all the way. Hopefully those are hardened bolts, not your mild steel, corner hardware store gems.

Regardless, the fixes seem to have worked for a Long time.

Make me wonder how many towers there are out there sitting on cracked base insulators.

I think of a fellow coworker who was in the broadcast industry and the stories he would tell of their unbelievable cheapness, then there were a few presentations I've been to given by the California Historical Radio Society by a few retired guys from the broadcast industry telling stories in the same vein.

Good eye there. Yup looks like it's been "corrected" a couple times. Gonna cost a lot of money to fix that
