Title: 40 Meter Long Path Fun
Post by: AJ1G on February 04, 2017, 05:26:45 AM
I don't usually get on 40 in the late afternoon but yesterday I was out and about in the Tacoma and had my little K1 QRP CW rig on at around 1600 local here in CT.  Many EU stations were hammering in, worked a couple and then went down to my favorite local mobile operating location at Stonington Point.  In addition to the EU stations, I was amazed to hear VK5LJ calling CQ on 7005 and even more amazed to work him!  First time I've  ever worked VK on the long path mobile, let alone with 5 watts to a Hamstick on 40.  Also heard several JAs in there. That big salt water ground plane to the SE and S sure works its magic at times.  A very low noise level on the band yesterday no doubt helped.  The VK was running 100 w to a long wire.

That is a good time to work Australia on LP. Looking back through my log, 1600-1630 was a very common time. This tine of year is also a good time. Late December and early Jan is better for JAs on LP in our afternoon. I've heard them LP in the mornings into February though.

Good conditions for much of this afternoon on 40 meters for stations more than 200-250 miles apart. About 3:30 PM that band seemed to stretch even further. I tuned down to the international SSB portion and could hear European stations very clearly. A 9K2 (Kuwait) was easy copy at 3:45. This is 3.5 hours before our sunset!

Chris - time to get your mobile back to the beach. Long path from VK coming through almost daily now. Heard to JAs coming through this afternoon too. One of them sounded like he had a hi-fi SSB setup.

Steve,
I was reading the mail Wed night while mobile on 95 in Portland Maine. Did I hear you calling "CQ DX" about 5 pm? I was focused on traffic. If it was you, you were slamming in

Carl, that was me. Was on for about 2 hours before sunset. Worked 105 DX stations in Europe and a few in the Middle East.

Steve, you can work long path to Europe in your mornings. I would think short path would be the best bet to JA land.
