Title: AM Scholarship.......from the LEAGUE?????
Post by: W1RC on January 22, 2017, 04:08:57 PM
I was looking through some of the ARRL Foundation scholarships trying to find a few that my daughter, K1TYV, might qualify for and I ran across this one:

The Helen Laughlin AM Mode Memorial Scholarship-
Award Amount: $1,000

Number of Awards: 1 per year

License Requirement: General Class or higher

Region: Preference is given to residents of Texas,  If no qualified applicant is identified, preference will be given to residents of Arkansas.  If no qualified applicant is identified, preference will be given to residents of the ARRL West Gulf (Texas, Oklahoma) or Delta (Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee) Divisions.

Field of Study: Any

Institution: 4-year college or university

Other: Preference is given to women Amateur Radio operators who are performing at a high academic level.  Preference is given to applicants who have made a contact in the AM mode, but is not required.

Could not believe my eyes when I read this.....unfortunately we do not live in the right region to apply.

It is ridiculous that the ARRL would put a regional preference, or worse yet, a regional limitation on a scholarship program.  The only criteria should be what they list as "other", performing at a high academic level, and participation in AM mode.

The ARRL administrates the various scholarships; they don't define the terms and conditions as I see it.

First line in link above:
"Individuals or groups may wish to establish an ARRL Foundation Scholarship to support young radio amateurs who are pursuing higher education."

Maybe they should just put a big box of money at the front door entrance with a sign that says "High Academics, take what you need but only if you can say five commonly used AM idioms."  :D

1)  Strap

2)  Slop bucket

3)  Testicling

4)  Dog log

5)  Yay-ello

Bonus:  Now I'm reaching back to when I was 14 years old, but I remember my elmer telling me about a good AM'er story involving a can of Raid.  It's an old neuron, so it's not reliable.  If it means nothing, forget it, but it was a funny story...

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the ARRL begin to focus on AM at the same level as CW or SSB. This shift toward mode parity began last year and already shows a growing trend for 2017.

Truly, we live in wondrous times......

I was looking for updates for my RSP1 ( yes, I am newly smug). While on the SDR play website,  I came across a blurb referencing a Feb 2017 QST review of the aforementioned devise.

Apparently, the ARRL Lab performed a 'Receiver Dynamic Test' as the manufacturer did not specify AM sensitivity..............   3.885 MHz, 1.97 ìV; 50.4 MHz, 1.97 ìV     GACK ! ! !    They tested on known AM frequencies!   Watt is going on??  (last week WA1HenryLR  was on ssb! and WA3VJB is an ARRL member!)

Is this the the end-of-times ????

The gender discrimination is repugnant.
