Title: QRN from lightning generates safe hole in radiation belt
Post by: k4kyv on March 12, 2005, 12:17:54 AM
When lightning makes your favorite AM radio station crackle and pop, it is also cleaning up a radiation hazard overhead.

NASA scientists have finally worked out why there's a safe zone in the Earth's radiation belts, thousands of km above the surface. It turns out that lightning in the lower atmosphere generates radio waves which interact with radiation around the Earth, removing some of its energy and changing the direction of charged particles. This safe zone could be used as a haven by satellites to reduce the damage they take while operating in these regions.

Don, this could be the platform you have been looking for!!!! I think it is a logical reason to petition the FCC to return to the Kilowatt DC input. Maybe if you attack it from the environmental angle, (Contact Greenpeace etc), you could get a strong lobby force to push for higher power limits. This would protect the world from hazardous radiation and also assist 'BIG BUSINESS', by protecting their satellite assets. Myabe it would also protect BPL!:D

We still have a power limit?

Heh heh. I knew lightning was good for something other than knocking off dumb golfers!
