Title: What is this? water jacket or X-ray tube? Post by: Opcom on July 04, 2015, 01:09:39 PM Can anyone comment on what this is? I do not think it is a Seifert X-ray tube as the seller claims. Could it be a water jacket for a transmitting tube?

It pulls an unshown radiation hot alloy cylinder that needs to be cooled for excessive radiation, possibly a neutron source that is also damped by the hydrogen in water, similar to paraffin. X-rays though? Got me?

Best guess is a water jacket but for what.. Any X-ray tube would not work too well with the anode covered that much. I have a Victoreen, the ion chamber model rather than the more expensive GM tube model. Guess it didn't make any difference for your typical family exposed to several rads. If the ion chamber one is going off, the problem is already serious. The reading can indicate how many hours or days one could wait before evacuating. Those are best for use after a serious incident of some sort rather than any kind of casual or hobby work. Might pay to send it off and have it checked and calibrated these days. |
