Title: Am I being scammed?
Post by: Detroit47 on January 17, 2015, 10:31:39 AM
Does any one have a good email for Edward C Hoffman K5AH ? I have been contacted by a person using this email edwardk5ah@gmail.com. There has been a scam alert on this name. I asked for a photo of the part I wanted to buy and he sent me a photo off of somebody else s site. It looks like a scam to me.

Seems a complaint to the postal service and the Las Vegas police is in order from one of those who actually sent money.   Interestingly Google street view shows the address as an actual house, a lot of these scams use one of the anonymous post office drop boxes.

I was pretty sure this guy was bogus. After posting on this site I have gotten several emails and an PM. This fellow seems to be very busy. I Googled the call and came up with a scam alert. Sometimes it pays to be a cynical person.

Nearly all of these scammers will use a call from a ham who does NOT have their e-mail address posted on QRZ.

That seems to be the # 1 red flag.

What do you mean by IM? Was it an Amfone PM or something else?

There is no member with the user name K5AH or an email edwardk5ah@gmail.com.

Steve I didn't say that the person was on this site. Also I used wrong term I should have said PM. A member of this site told me in a PM that they had had dealings with this person also. I am going to attach a copy of one of the emails form this guy so you may examine it. I can forward all of my correspondence with this fellow if you like. As far as the email address it worked this morning.

the English or grammar certainly causes one to be skeptical.

Take a look at the QRZ bio for that call sign (dated 2013-12-30 17:43:35).

Does any one have a good email for Edward C Hoffman K5AH ?

I couldn't find an emal, but wm7d.com shows:

HOFFMAN II, EDWARD C
20062 ROCQUIN LANE
PONCHATOULA, LA 70454

... so I suggest you send him a letter.

The only phone number at that address is for a different person, with a name usually used by a woman, but in the same age range, so it might be his wife. The line did not answer when I dialed it.

Good luck.

Steve

IM used to stand for Instant Message --  way back in the last century.  I'm really getting old   ;D

Thanks. It wasn't clear to me. Just wanted to determine if we had a problem on this site.

Fred,

I advise you to do the opposite: if you have a page there, even if it's just a "placeholder" like mine, then it's much harder for anyone to hijack it.

I'd bet that the scammer found a ham who isn't on the air, and stole his virtual ID. That means he could open a qrz page because it didn't yet exist, and (like most sites) qrz has few protections against that kind of fraud.
