Title: wow energy hog busted!! Post by: Opcom on October 22, 2014, 08:43:23 PM many of us have the smart meters, this is not about whether we want it or not, but to show the interesting granularity of info available.
The example is the use of the station including "Tucker" transmitter the Saturday before last. Wow the station an electron-guzzling hog! Apparently used 5KWH or so in the 4 hours of the QSO time. The point is that the meter clearly shows when the ham station and the lights, HVAC, etc. in the shack was turned on. If the FCC had the electrical smart meter records of a miscreant they could just about prove when the TX was in use, instead of having to presume so much. Title: Re: wow energy hog busted!! Title: Re: wow energy hog busted!! Post by: Opcom on October 24, 2014, 06:37:23 PM yeah the 'farmers' will have to come up with an energy storage mechanism in order to present an un-suspicious consumption pattern while using the energy according to their requirements. AMfone - Dedicated to Amplitude Modulation on the Amateur Radio Bands
Today there are energy storage systems based on flywheels that are pretty efficient, 97%. A whole house UPS (30KVA CCS 60-100KVA surge) could, with enough batteries, conceal an energy use pattern smoothing it out or controlling the of the profile so that no useful pattern was visible. What it would mean, I to have a many-KWH capacity, and use it during times when power cost more, or if the customer account is based on peak usage. The electric co here was giving some silly thing like 'free power at night'. OK that would be the inconvenient 9PM to 5AM or something, but imagine spinning up a kiloton of flywheels during that time and then using it for the air conditioning during the day when the juice is 15 cents.. Well OK what a waste.. but it was really cool to notice the ham radio session! maybe an 'energy hog award' could be added to the yearly AM Rally. The most KWH consumed during the allowed time period. It would go well with the 'most lbs per watt' idea. |
