Inside the Nems-Clarke...

note the very high quality fan?  ;D

...and the nuvistors?

plug in PS caps?

other cool things, and the nice meters...

Imagine what this beast cost when it was new?

About 10 years ago I won a Nems-Clark semi-modern receiver at Gov-Liquidators.....Before I could pick it up the Army pulled the unit and returned my money...So sad...

Those are surveillance and countermeasure sets. Very nice. Some also have a grounded grid input RF amp, very robust when the area is alive with too much electrical activity!

Saw the 51j (?) and the Sx101...

The sx101 looked a little rough/borderline parts rig..maybe looks are deceiving...
I'd bet the 51J worked.

I almost bit on an Eico 720 that was recapped...the guy wanted $90 for it... no VFO or 730 modulator, otherwise I probably would have taken it home.

Years ago use to downlink APT Weather satellite images directly around 137.2 or so and you had to have a wide band maybe 50 to 100 KC wide  FM receiver for that. Have to wonder if that was what that Nems Clark was intended for? I used a sound card and software in a desktop system at the time but think in the old days they went straight to some sort of fax printer.

EKH, that's interesting. I had no idea what in the world this gear would actually be used for. I assumed it was actually some sort of tunable IF for a down conversion scheme like microwave or satellite...

I think I'll just go drink some rum and eat some cake.

Anyhow after those words from our sponsors, back to our program.

Checked the R-388 today. Aside from being stiff and in need of lube and contacts cleaned, it appears to work fine. The 1st RF tube needed swapping, then the sensitivity came up nicely. Think the AF output tubes might be soft or need to have the bias checked. The BFO adjust is very stiff and doesn't fully rotate, will need to lift the can and see what's wrong with the variable adjust cap. Front panel needs a nice cleaning.

Good rig!  ;D
