Title: New Project = More Pain
Post by: ka4koe on July 21, 2014, 09:41:38 AM
Just purchased a Harvey Wells TBS50D off the 'bay. Lowballed an offer and it was accepted. Doesn't work and will need restoration.

WHAT, you gave up on the Valiant  ;D Lower power, need a VFO, visible rust, what's not to like. Some people like pain.

Nah, didn't give up. I ran out of parts to replace. At the present moment, the Beast is functional (***execute genuflection maneuver***).  However, it is sitting on my work bench with a bag of parts labeled  "Timtron Audio"; fall project. The Harvey Wells is a "winter project". Paid 50 bux for it; warts and all.

Came in today. Not really bad looking inside. Just dirty. No zorch marks anywhere in evidence. The 807 plate cap was loose inside, leaving only the bare wire sticking out of the glass envelope. Of course, the electrolytics appear absolutely horrid.

The original "DC to daylight" rig :)  Although I wouldn't expect to set any power records on 2 meters.

They are neat looking little rigs.

Memorial site for Cliff Harvey, W1RF (SK) and his amazing career

I've got two TBS-50d's, a HW Z-Match, and a HW CRT Rejuvenator!

I love CRT testers and rejuvenators. With great care, scope CRTs can be rejuvenated about a third to half the time. Their guns are mostly tiny inside compared to high current TV guns.
