Title: Wire (pronounced "WAR" rhymes with "car")
Post by: ka4koe on May 03, 2013, 07:50:39 AM
Anyone ever used 600V rated THHN/THWN stranded, No. 12 AWG for anode wiring for a 6146? The anode wiring on my transmitter looks pretty ratty.

You really don't need wire that big, the wire from the plate choke to the plates of the 572Bs in my Hunter linear is only maybe 18 gauge, and that thing has 2000v on the plates at 180 watts ouput. Also, I would go with solid over stranded.

The big Ameritron amps run 3200-3600V at an amp plus thru #26 plate chokes which is rated to 4KV.

For a 6146 all you need is #20-22 stranded for strength and some flexibility, none of the better manufacturers use the cheaper solid wire which easily breaks when disturbed often.

Use some thinner more flexible wire.  #12 THHN is way to too stiff to use.

This is a pic of my old National 2KW PEP linear.   The connections to the plates is just the leads of the 2W resistors, but, you can also see the resistors are fed by the 26 Ga wire off the plate choke.
