Good group from about 7PM ET. All signed by about 8:15 PM. The band remained intact the entire time and no QRM.

I was still hearing you and Jim very well when we signed. I'm sure we could have continued on for quite some time. I tuned down the band and heard many strong stateside stations on SSB. A little further down the band was OD5ZZ booming in from Lebanon and a VK6 coming in on the long path.

I called CQ about 5:30 CDST on 14.325 because of a SSB QSO going on at 14.332 but received no responses.

I found the band to be extremely noisy and QSB.

I did hear you guys off and on but felt conditions were too iffy to break in.

Interesting. When I did hear you Steve I thought you had to be running at least 250W since you peaked at 10/S9 here in CR.

Steve was putting out an excellent signal at low power, and has his wire antennas working very well. He was peaking S-9 here in Florida, with not that much QSB. Equally impressive is how he has the FT-1000 sounding on AM. Very FB!

Sorry you couldn't make it Jim, darn good turn out.

KD6OS (Ralph -OK) Net control as he could copy everyone at his location.
W7IUC (Norm - TN)
N2XD (John - NC)
WA2ROC (Dick - NC)
W8GPA (Rupe -OH)
W4UMH (Howard - FL)
W9AD (Dave - IL) at home QTH, not in Mexico.
N1VIV (Joe - CT)
KS2AM (Sam - NJ)
and myself of course.....

Norm had his beam pointed west most of the net looking for west coast check-ins, without ever hearing a response. Net finished up around 8:30 Eastern. Then Dave (W6PSS) and Pete (W1HCE) broke in for a bit, and everything concluded at about 8:50 Eastern.

Have fun next Monday evening guys, I have a meeting that evening that I know is going to run long and I can't make it. See ya in two weeks!

The check-ins included:

W8GPA
KD6OS
N2XD
W8FAX
WA2ROC
W2IQK
ZF2SJ
W9AD

It felt real good to be back after missing the past two weeks. Condx were fair tonight, until towards the end of the net when signals picked up quite nicely. With that brought two Spanish speaking operators that parked right on .330 USB, that were peaking S-9 to me here in Florida as mentioned on another thread. They refused to move for about 20 minutes, but thankfully then went QRT.

Check-ins were:
W8GPA (Rupe)
WD5JKO (Jim)
WA2ROC (Dick)
W2IQK (Carl)
KD6OS (Ralph)
Timtron
K4HX (Steve)
KS2AM (Sam)
and me. :)

The net finished up about 8:20 eastern. Same time, same frequency next week. Vy 73

Wild prorogation last night! Signals one moment would be in the mud, and then S-9 or even S-9+. Check-ins were:

W8GPA (Rupe)
W9AD (Dave)
W2IQK (Carl)
KD4RSX (Randall)
W8BOX (Tom)
KD6OS (Ralph)
WA2ROC (Dick)
KA1QIY (Joe)
N1VIV (Joe)
and myself.

Net ended at around 8:20 eastern, as the band seemed to begin to go out at that time.

The Monday Evening 20M AM Net Report, 14,330 Khz @ ~7 PM Eastern.

Tonight the group was a bit small, and there was short skip. For the first time I could hear Ralph KD6OS, about a 400 mile hop from Round Rock, Tx. to Porum, Ok.

The check-ins included:

KD6OS
WA4NJY
W9AD
W2IQK
WD5JKO

Conditions were variable, and the Tall ship at my QTH was Dave, W9AD (S9) followed by Kyle W2IQK (S7). Ralph and Ed were S4-S7 with rapid QSB.

Had a great QSO with W0VMC and WA1HLR on 14.330 lat night about 9 PM EDT. KB2WIG and WA2ROC were also in there but couldn't hear them. Tim and Robert both had 20 over 9 plus signals in NJ. Tim was even strong off the back of the beam.

Pete,

I had signed out before you checked in. At first you were in the noise, but after 2 or 3 transmissions you built up to S9+ in Texas.

There was a big group last night over a 2 hour period. I logged the following stations from Round Rock, Texas:

N2XD
W0LS
KA4KOE
AC0OB
KD4UMU
W0VMC
WA1HLR
WA2ROC
KJ4QVJ
VE6CQ
W6TSJ (first west coast check in this year!)
WA1UQM
KB2WIG
WD5JKO

The group went from Net mode to round table mode, to split frequency mode, back to net mode. It was all fun. At one point the "Tron" gave a dissertation on making a beam antenna.

I didn't fire up until late; I was crawling around the roof cleaning out the gutters earlier in the evening. Not sure how many of the stations listed I would have been able to hear or work. I did work AC0OB several weeks ago when I checked in. The 20 meter skip can be funking at times plus I think the "K" Index last night was 8 or 10. And, my tower was fully nested so the tri-bander was only about 35 feet off the ground. I did hear Robert, W0VMC, later that evening on 40 meters but he wasn't as strong. Working Maine to NJ at any time on 20 meters is not a common occurrence.

It was frustrating in that people seemed to be hearing me, but those same stations were right at my noise level. Only Timtron broke above the noise floor. I could hear Nicky from Ireland, but there was a rapid flutter on him. He was stronger then many stateside stations that I usually hear well.

Maybe next week will be different.

The conditions were quite interesting. The last time I was on with the group was about a month ago. I could not hear WA1HLR at all. This time he was loud - 20/25 over 9. I could not hear stations in TN and KY a month ago. This time KD4UMU in KY was 20 over 9! Later in the evening, I could hear Phil, KA4KOE in GA. So the shorter skip was working FB. But at the same time Nick was loud from Ireland, so longer skip was working well too. Jim, I was hearing you but you were not as strong as in the past.

Should be fun to see how the propagation works throughout the summer.

I was only able to listen this week. Heard W7IUC/4 IIRC calling CQ a few times then move down to .320 to work a KP4 split mode. Also heard Phillip but not as strong as previous weeks.

Bucket net was active on 332.

I got on .330 early and spoke briefly with John, WA4NJY and Norm, W7IUC, but the noise level and QSB were bad.

I did hear David, W9AD, Tim WA1HLR, Phil KA4KOE, and Joe, N1VIV but no joy trying to get them.

At one point some SSB'er came and on and I went to SSB and announced there was an ongoing AM QSO, but overall, conditions here in the midwest were terrible.

The Monday Evening 20M AM Net (get together?) Report, (7-15-2013), 14,330 Khz @ ~4 PM West Coast time, 7 PM Eastern.

Tonight's get together was really interesting. At first I had poor copy of the W4's, while some other QSO's ocurred in the NE at the same time, all  on 14,330. As time passed, things got better, and we had a huge group. Here is a sampling:

K4BKC
KA4KOE
KB1NFS
W9AD
WA1HLR
K7GUD, Idaho
W0VMC
W1GUD
K1KW, The tall ship tonight
W0HRO
WA2S
KD0OZS, Wyoming
WA2CWA
NILG
KI4GMH
W0LS
WA2ROC
WD5JKO

There was some discussion about whether we should be more into net mode, or more into QSO mode where folks talk, and then turn it to whoever they hear that hasn't talked in a while. Unfortunately, some folks got left out, and with the propagation varying, it was hard to keep things moving without occasional missing someone.

Perhaps with a group growing this large, we should have instead splintered off +/- 10 Khz either side. Comments welcome.

Last nights "Monday Evening 20M AM "Gathering":

I got in for a while last night. It was going when I checked in, and still going when I checked out. Initially we were on 14,326 and later moved back to 14,330.

Some of the stations last night include, but are not limited to:

The big 4:

W0VMC
WA1HLR
K1KW
N2X2

Others:

KB1VWC
KA4KOE
WB0SND
KD6OS
WA2ROC
W0LS
VE6CQ
W5JAY
WD5JKO

And several others....

One thing, Chuck K1KW suggested we consider 20M AM more then just Monday evening. From my perspective, it seems that 14,286 is pretty void of AM, and often crowded with nearby SSB stations. Therefore I wonder how 14,330 is on other nights, and weekends? Maybe folks can add 14,330 to their radio presets, and check it once in a while as well as call that occasional CQ.

Phillip, before the band crapped out last night, your signal peaked into the "Tall Ship" category.  We did miss the Valiant's shifty VFO though.  :P

Last night (7/29) we had a good turn out again, although propagation resulted in several stations hearing only one person (me).

Mother Propagation makes giants of us all from time to time.

Equipment in use last night:

Flex 5000a @ 19w carrier
SGC SG500 running 100-110W carrier
Samson Gtrack Condenser Microphone
All band "L", 60' high, 85' long, 6-50' radials over very conductive ground (near swamp here)

Got the RF shield over the VFO and replaced filament filter caps for the 2nd time, and now the mudulator in the Valiant has up and quit again. I think the dern microphone connector is acting up.

A squall line forced me off the air. Timmy and I were both hammered last night.

Again, I had no value on 20m last night.

Propigation has been suspect. Last week, W0vmc was the channel master and last night he was an S9. W1gud was peaking at 50/9 on my Icom, W6tsj was around an S3 and didn't seem to be able to break in. wa1HLR has been so/so the last few weeks. I just don't know.

The only station I could hear that even moved my S-meter was WD5JKO. All the rest were either so far into the noise even with the product detector on, or there was nothing to hear when they were transmitting.

Listened here for a while and heard a carrier or 2. Nothing with enough to demodulate.

Listened here for a while and heard a carrier or 2. Nothing with enough to demodulate.

I have two antennas here. One is an OCF drooping dipole (135' long) up about 35' in the center, and the other is a 16' wide X 8' high rectangular loop orientated as a vertical loop and  fed at the top left corner with OWL.

The plane of both antennas is east-west. The noise floor on the OCF is about 'S5', and the loop is about 'S1'. Several stations like Rupe (W8GPA) hear me 1-2 'S' units stronger on the loop. The founder of this "Net", Brad WS4B heard me 1-2 "S' units stronger on the OCF from his Florida QTH. His location was in the plane of the loop, and therefore at the "null".

The reason I can hear so many of the stations is my location, and the low noise floor with that simple loop. The bottom of the loop is only 8' off the ground. If I had to use the OCF exclusively, then I might only copy a third of the stations that I have been copying with the loop.

I heard a few SSB signals on the band and few CW sigs, but that's about it.

I got in late, and had about a 45 minute contact with Timmy, WA1HLR. Signals varied from S1 to S9, but mostly S3-4. Still Tim was Q5. Tim said he worked a few stations before I got on.

20M was really poor tonight for stateside contacts.

It was a tuff go..I was late as the XYL took me out for supper..however I did manage to listen from 7:35 EST on..just a horrendous noise coming from static crashes and a very distorted spanish station and company..I moved up and down from 14.330 and discovered 14.340 and up to the edge were VERY quite..so I gave a shout several times but no luk..the rest of the local "gang" did manage to have a 'Q" on 330 earlier but left b/4 I got on..did hear K1KW Chuck calling CQ on 14.286..at 10 to 20 over here..didn't hear me but he did pick up a N1CQ op in his home state and carried on.......we will try once more this evening with a peek at 14.340 if 330 is busy agn............73 de DAVE

Monday Evening 20m AM Gathering, August 12, 2013

I got in late, and left early. Conditions for a change were excellent with many reporting S9+20 to S9+40 signals. As the adjacent channel stuff slowly went away, some opened up the xmit and receive bandwidth. To me it was like 10M in cycle 21. I have an Icom R8500 receiver (HF/VHF/UHF), and it has a calibrated S-meter, and a 12 Khz BW option for AM. It is rare to open up the BW and still have good S/N ratio. Many stations had really good audio that cannot be appreciated in a 6 Khz BW.

The check-ins included but are not limited to:

W9AD
WA2ROC
WA1HLR
K1KW
AB4AN
KD6OS
W0LS
W0VMC
KI4JMH
N2XD
KD0ZS
W5JAY

Tried to check in last night, but guess nobody was copying my Viking II.  Could copy K1KW with the RF gain all the way down on the HQ-170.  Though about disconnecting from the antenna relay and using a clip lead on the receiver.  Maybe next week.

It is unfortunate you guys did not get in. 20m propagation is funny, and this kind of thing happens. Many of the folks up north from me copied each other via back scatter. For example when Tim HLR raised power 4X, that allowed Chuck K1KW to copy him. To accomplish this, power and antenna gain are needed.

From my end in Texas, I got into the group running 55 watts into my vertical loop. I do admit there were times I heard weak hetrodynes when folks turned it over to someone else. From my end, they were all too weak to copy. I will try better given the chance to get some of those stations picked up.

Another option is to spin up or down 10 Khz and call CQ. Someone will hear you, or those with an SDR receiver will see you, and might move over and hook up with you.

KL7OF
W8GPA
W1GUD/4

A good get together. It will be interesting to see how propagation holds as the daylight hours decrease. Last year we disbanded the group in late fall since we lost propagation right after dark.

I could only hear 2 stations; WD5JKO and WA1HLR.
Both were 10 over most of the time.

Would appreciate anyone recording my station
so I can make improvements. Email to carl@n9efj.net

The wire antenna was full of static and difficult to tune
for 20.  I Used my vertical

the wire and shorten it up some.

No BA's here. TS-940 and NCL-2000.

Thanks for letting me check in. I'll be back...

Yesterday I got a nice letter in the mail (USPS) from a SWL named Joe who lives in New Hampshire.

Joe has been listening to the Monday evening 14,330 group for a year now on a Lafayette HA-600 receiver.

 Here are a few quotes:

"I've been listening to the net for about a year now, and checking on the results on AMFONE site at the library computer"

"Haven't noticed any up to date posting...shouldn't always be you!!"
-> Joe, my thoughts exactly!! There might be a "smug" factor in play here.. ;)

"The best signals heard (Oct 1) were W9AD, W0LS, and KE7TRP"

"I think K1KW might be about 75 miles away from here. Can't figure why he comes in???? (He's too close!)"
-> Joe, check Chucks QRZ page..

" Miss some of the original group that started this...WS4B, N2XD, and KD6OS...where are they?"

The letter really touched me, and makes me want to participate this coming Monday night.

The Monday Evening AM Gathering 6-9 PM CST, 14,330:

Last night we had a real treat. We had two groups (14330 and 14340), quickly changing propagation, and some heavy SSB QRM that came and went like a brief storm. We persevered, hung on, and the experience for many was a bunch of fun.

I logged the following stations on 14,330:

W7IUC
WA1HLR
K1KW

W9AD
W5QAP
N0RMB
N1HCE
WA2ROC
KE7TRP
K1ETP
KB1VWC

At one point during some SSB QRM, somebody (W9AD?) broadcast the famous Astabula bill, W8VYZ quote, "There Ain't a Slop Bucket in North America that can Bother Me!" It was true too, as all the SSB stations that came on top of us quickly fizzled out, or moved away...those that moved up were surprised to find another AM QSO on 14,340!  :P

Also, I hope our SWL friend, Joe from NH had good copy from many stations.

Nope,
I mounted the VFO cap rescued from a 1920s neutrodyne under the chassis near the VFO coil and a bit away from the front of the chassis. I was trying to eliminate any hand effects (And I was successful too) I cut the slot in the front panel and used a old 4 inch plastic dial from a 1930s radio for tuning. Because of the large diameter (4 inch) the amount the cap plates actually move is much less then the movement of the edge of the old dial. It gives me enuf control to tune it right on without the use of a vernier drive. I will pretty it up some and make up a thicker disc but essentially it is a poor mans vernier drive.  Bigger the drive wheel or knob the smaller the cap variation for the same amount of knob movement. Got original low grid current "fixed". Then the Valiant starts blowing fuses. Scratching my head as of 7:38 PM. Seriously ready to toss this transmitter. So needless to say, I won't make the net.

Didn't hear diddly in AM today. Did call a couple of times on 14286. Also listened up on 310 to 330.
What is the right time to listen.
The PA of this rig will also tune 40M and 15M . Maybe I should add a couple of osc coils and a switch. I suppose I could tap this osc coil at both ends (Hartley feeds cathode from centre tap) which would allow ventures upward. Might be able to make 40M with a extra parallel cap. I can get down to 8.7 mcs now. Anyway I will listen again . Only Mondays?
Is there any AM from European Hams?

  Don,

Activity last night started at about 5:30 PM Central time (UTC - 06:00). There has been activity other days, and sometimes 8 PM or later, mostly around 14,330-340. We have had some European ham check-ins; I recall one from Ireland that checked in over the summer.

The Monday Evening AM Gathering 6-9 PM CST, 14,330:

Last night was a mixture of good and bad. The good part is we had Liz K4GHT check-in. She had a great signal into Texas. As for the bad, SSB interference persisted. We moved down to 14,229 to allow some room between us and that other net on 14,332. That was a HUGE mistake since an extremely strong station decided to camp out on 14,330.  :'(  As result, things got chaotic resulting in many just going away.

The check-ins included:

KE7TRP
K4GHT
W9AD
K7IUC/4
KB1VWC
W0VMC
K9GAS
KL7OF
KD0ZS
KI4MLN
WD5JKO

I think we should hold our ground on 14,330. Every time we move (several times now) it seems like a SSB station parks themselves right where we were, and that is usually 1-2 khz from us.

We had many drifting VFO's last night that moved 3 Khz or more in under a minute transmitting. Maybe we should start grinding some of those old 40M Novice crystals to 7165?  :-[

It was difficult yesterday...Condx weren't very good out west..I had some problems getting on freq as I was using a new SDR and I had not calibrated it yet.....(I still haven't figured out how to do it).....I heard some of the eastern stations start out strong and then fade into the noise and take a long time to come back...DEEP QSB..14332 has been the YL SSB FREQ forever and they aren't going to move for us...I wouldn't ask them to..I would suggest we move up higher to 14340 or 14345...I am no longer xtal controlled and I think I was the last holdout ...I changed to a VFO controlled driver for my 20 M rig just so we could move around ...When this gathering of 20M AMers works, it is a lot of fun and always interesting...Thanks for the report Jim....Over

Great Conditions last night down here in the Southern Swamps of Louisiana.
Had some great QSO's with some incredible signals from the following Outlaws...

WA1HLR - Tim was 40db over S9
W0LS - Harry was 30dB over S9
KB1VWC - Steve was S9
K1KW - Chuck was 50dB over S9 on his Low Angle Take Off Config - WOW!   8)
W7MD - Damon was 20dB over S9
K1ETP - Rich was 15dB over S9
WB1EAD - Dave was S9
W7CPA - Randy was 20dB over S9

We were on 14.328Mc due to Traffic up the band at the beginning.

The Monday Evening AM Gathering 6-9 PM CST, 14,330:

We had some long skip tonight. The group was small, and each station could only hear 1 or two others. We ended up moving to 40M to 7285 then 7290.

Stations showing up that I am aware of on 20M:

W9AD / in Mexico
WA1HLR
K4GHT Liz
W7MD
W0LS
K1KW
WD5JKO

Then on 40M we had:

KD0ZS
WA2PJP
K1KW
N0BD
KB1VWC
WD5JKO

Signals were good on 40M until the BC stations started popping up. The fellows in the NE were too close for much copy amongst themselves.

The Monday Evening AM Gathering 6 PM CST, 14,330:

Terrible was a good word for 20M propagation tonight.

Heard KE7TRP, K1KW, and briefly talked to them. Signals in the noise, S3-S5 at best with rapid QSB.

Chuck and I ended up again on 7290, but that too was poor.

Chuck might put out some calls on 20M AM next Monday afternoon. I'll be at work.

Looks like The Monday evening group is disbanding due to crappy night time propagation until next spring.

I put out several calls on 14330, and 14288. I tried to squeeze between some massive SSB signals that seemed wider then I was. Many seemed to have lots of LSB energy that was garbled IMD. I could not hear my spot signal unless I disconnected the antenna.

Went to 7290 then 7293. Had a good round table with KD60S, N2XD, and WD7F. I was pivot man, signals good. Later on, I heard Timtron working several stations.

20M was a bust.

I had a nice 30 min AM QSO on 14330 from about 9:30 to 10:00 PM local time. I called CQ and got an answer on my third call. One station in Ohio, and another one in BC Canada. Signals were excellent, then rapid QSB, then gone in the span of about a minute. But it was great while it lasted. Second QSO on the new 20M AM RF deck. Was running about 300W carrier. Dipole antenna. Good reports. The station in BC was QRP and Q5.

If SSB stations are transmitting in the frequency area of interest, why would you want to incite possible deliberate interference to "plow the rows", since that's what you would be doing.

KD6OS Ralph
W0VMC Robert
N2XD John

And several others that are listed on a note pad that's back in the ham shack this morning.

And to the fellow from Florida (I think...) who said we were off frequency, here's my reply.

I was on 14.27 "something" megacycles because the analog scale on the 50+ year old Mohawk receiver only gets that close.

Anyway, most of us heard just about everyone else and we had a great time.

Phil, sorry about not picking you up...I just did not hear you..

I was having problems with my Flex3000 reacting to a high RF environment. This all started after getting the GSB-201 amplifier in the chain. I finally made a big improvement by taking the twisted pair audio line into the rear Flex DB-9 connector, and running that line three time through a 1.5" long type 43 ferrite bead. My impedance meter showed that three turns through that bead had > 500 ohms from 80-20M. The raspy and peaked audio issue went away.

I ended up talking to Timtron from about 8:30PM to 10PM CDT with S9 + signals both ways. The band was completely quiet with no one in the pan adapter except for us.

Steve, you were S9 last nite at about 8:00 local time and I think you heard me, but not well.  I also heard Carl and James a little, but shut down at 8:30 due to lots of QSB.  Maybe I should have stayed around longer.

maybe next week.....

Right now Wednesday  sept 10,  11:15 PST WWV 15 MHz is boiling in...yet the 20 meter ham band seems devoid of signals...
Yesterday afternoon I worked W1LYD from his cabin in the Yukon..We talked for over an hour on 14330 and no breakers...Brian was very strong here...
The Monday afternoon 14330 group was large this week..15 stations heard here in Tum Tum,WA.. coast to coast     I'm going to make some noise on 14330...AM    Steve

I had planned to check in, but I'm too close to the eastern stations.  I could hear only W0LS & W9AD here in Virginia ... both had commanding signals.

Good net last night. NE guys coming in lima charlie with KL7OF PW but readable in SE GA. Friend W1GUD Warren and Timtron (Warren at Timtron's) 30 DB/S9 consistent. Haven't been able to get on many Monday nets as of late due to tstorm activity (tstorms delayed one day and will be here today). Many good comments on the Valiant/new ANT. Approximately a dozen total check-ins but do not have list handy as I type this.

Last night on the net, Ralph KD6OS asked, "What happened to Brad, WS4B?"

I looked at his QRZ page and found this:

"Selling off gear, as I have decided to go QRT."

"To the friends I have made on the air, I'll never forget you. It's just time for me to move on............"

 "I always loved the ragchew!"

That about answers Ralph's question.

73's Brad.

I also talked to Ed, N5AEA, who was MOBILE on 20 meter AM.  Nice signal too!

Is anybody interested in getting the net back working again?  I haven't heard much in 2 or 3 Mondays.

It was the best conditions I have experienced on the Net in months.  Good to hear all the activity back again.

One member said, and I agree, "...it's time to get off 160 on Mondays and get back on the 20 meter net...".

I joined in late last night, only hearing Robert W0VMC signing off to get some dinner.  I listened and thought I heard N8SDR but he is usually down in the noise level here in NC due to the proximity of our stations.

I was then joined by N4JOY Chris in Sebring FL and then by Ralph KD6OS, who was part of the first group.   We talked for a while but nobody was around to add to the group.

Yes, it is nice to hear lots of rigs on the air, but I wonder where the West Coasters, and Far Westers were.

WD5JKO - Jim, Round Rock, TX, G76, GSB201, 5/9 to 5/9+10
KD6OS - Ralph, Porum, OK, 5/9 to 5/9+10
N2XD - John, Franklin, NC, S7 about 70% copy
WA2ROC - Dick, Durham, NC, no copy, too close to my location

I keep forgetting about Monday nights.  Someone needs to text me and remind me.  Either while I'm mobile or at the house, I can get on 20m AM.

A few start about 6:00 EST
With what seems to be majority in around 7-7:30 EST - From what I hear n this location

and yes there is a YL net right above but usually here they are fairly weak and not in too long after things start

On that note from what I have seen and heard 14.325-327 seems to be a bit more open most of the time and often the group  moves down in that general area

Had I known you were getting crap down there I would have ask the group to move down to 320,

I started a little earlier than usual since we had storms moving in and wasn't sure how long I would get to do some AM.
When I started there was a slop bucket group around 322 so I settled in on 327 since a few other slop buckets were around 330.
when I popped down there you were in QSO with WA2ROC and seemed like you guys were having a good QSO when I mentioned a group was up the band
