Title: ANT SWITCH
Post by: AE1CT on March 07, 2013, 03:20:43 PM
CAN I PUT MY 75 ANTENNA ON A TEE TO CONNECT THE TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER TO THE SAME ANTENNA AND OPERATE WHILE THE RECEIVER IS MUTED WITHOUT DAMAGING THE RECEIVER?

The answer is "No".

Exactly..NO.  You will need a relay to switch the antenna between the transmitter and receiver.

OK, SO WHATS THE BEST WAY OF HOOKING UP A TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER TO THE SAME ANTENNA WITHOUT SPENDING A FORTUNE.

Something does not add up here. All caps message, Amateur extra license, and a pretty well outfitted station as viewed on QRZ....  Seems like you should know the answer to that question.

THIS IS A TEST.  DO NOT TOUCH YOUR SET.  THIS IS A TEST.

..you really expect a concrete answer?   ;D

If I can't find a reasonable dow key I may have to buy a DPDT knife switch.

Oh, go ahead and use the T-connector. Let us know how well that works for you  ;D

But, but,
He's not
running
A kilowatt.

Might even have gas discharge protection.

Who knows?

..the shadow do..

Seriously, now you need to know how to hook up the Dow key, energize it correctly at proper voltage obtained from what might be a modern or old fashioned rig and stuff, such as using the auxiliary contacts for muting.

Actually, this can be done under certain conditions. A lot depends on power and receiver or converter input.

Back in my early days, I had a 6 and 2 meter homebrew (I didn't build it) rig with a 2E26 in the final. Didn't own a Dow key and I used a knife switch on my HF transmitter. My 6 and 2 meter converters had an input coil with a 2 or 3 turn insulated link. Cold end of the link went to ground. Hot end of the link went to the input converter connector. Antenna was connected directly to the transmitter output. I connected a 7 watt lamp (one of those Xmas tree types) in series with the transmitter output and the converter input. In receive mode, lamp was off, cold resistance low, and converter and receiver performed fine. Key down, lamp lit, resistance climbs high, and there was no converter smoke. Any RF that actually got to the grid of the tube, probably just shut the RF amp off. Since I always used earphones back then, no muting contacts were necessary. And, with this setup, I was able to tune the transmitter plate and loadings caps without actually keying the transmitter. Used this setup for several years before moving on to higher power transmitters and the advantages of a Dow key switching arrangement.

What a sad display.  The man is elderly and types in caps and bold so he can see what he types on the screen.  In other words a disability. He explained this in another thread.

AE1CT If you need help with a dowkey hookup or anthing like that please contact me and I will help you.   I will call you on the phone and do what I can.  Hope to hear you on the air sometime

Steve,

Clark is right. The tone of your answer is a good example. It seems that too many times humility is answered with humiliation. I contribute money to support this site and have received a lot of help. But geez, there are  people on here that are so quick to swarm that it will make you cringe.  :(

Steve and all,

First of all I totally agree with what you said but this is a unique case. If anyone wants to research it you will find that AE1CT is about 63 years old. This is a lot more to it and obviously the QRZ listing is wrong. I wrote QRZ about that and they got back to me saying that the age setting is user supplied. I am not sure about that but the bottom line is you can't always trust what you read.

Part of the fun of this board is the humor...   puns, "gotchas", gallows... you name it.

You soon catch on regardless of disabilites or proclivities.  ;D
The mark of a man is how you take it.

Along with enjoying or suffering through all the personalities on this board you get a ton of good advice, documentation and references.

I have been steered many times in a correct but different direction by my friends, acquaintances and even the not so friendly.  A gentle or not so gentle "sting" will focus the mind like nothing else. ...  uh, urk  8)  ..well, not counting what counts for focus based on ten million years of evolution.

So I take a lot of what I see here with a grain of salt.
Place trust in those who've "been there."
Do not implicitely agree with everything to be polite.
And try to add to the general knowledge pool and discourse,

From knife switch pix to exotic electronic T/R switches and all our years of lash-ups inbetween, just ask us.

Gary

While I am not a fan of the Dowkey relay, I think it's the perfect solution for your changeover needs.  I looked at the one I have and it not only has the changeover for your antenna from receiver to transmitter, it has the receiver mute connection. I'd go with that.

I threw together a really crude changover box for my Collins 32V1 / 75A2.  I took some pictures of here and will post it.  In my application the relay is just an open frame type that plugs in and works perfectly for 75 meters.  As you go up in frequency it probably would not be the recommended approach.  Good luck.

Buy an old Johnson T/R switch or build one.  You can find circuits for them in many older ARRL handbooks.   I've used a Johnson T/R  switch for years.   There are those who say they aren't any good for 160M but I've not seen any great changes in signal levels.

I've been going to measure the Gain/Loss of these switches for a long time, but haven't gotten to it yet.
