Title: Front panel refinishing
Post by: W9BHI on November 07, 2012, 02:39:50 PM
Does anybody know of anyone who refinishes and silkscreens front panels?
I hear Dee is not doing it any more.
I would like to get my Ranger II redone.
Thanks,
Don W9BHI

I checked with Chuck at Johnsonradioresto.com.
He does fantastic work but his cost is more than the rig is worth.
I will keep looking.

I expected that from you :)

I know YEC in CA used to do them but the company he used, went under and took his stencils with them :(

I sent Chuck an email asking for quotes on various transmitter cabinets and panel rather than complete restoration services that he does.  I used Dee in the past and he just did cabinets I wanted done.  I will let you know when and if I got those cabinet only quotes from him.  Dee did excellent work and although some people thought he was expensive, when you figure the work involved along with the skill involved it was well worth what he charged.  Dee was a great guy and I really miss those visits Martha and I made down to his QTH.

Chuck quoted me well over $350.00 for the panel and cabinet.
I realize that there is a lot of labor involved to do the job correctly.
I am not saying his prices are out of line but a Ranger II just ain't worth it (to me anyway).
It's been electrically refurbished and a pretty face won't make it fuction any better than it does.

I have to agree that it is difficult to spend so much for the front panel but someone mentioned that the silk screening only of the front is less expensive.  All then one needs to do is strip and paint the front on their own, send in the panel and get the silk screen done.

I am going to do my own panel but I do have a shop and spray capability but silk screen is a hobby I don't have time for right now so I am looking at alternatives for the lettering.

Let me know if you find some alternative for less.

Tom
