Title: Phil - W2PHL with an amazing Yaesu FT-847 on 7290
Post by: W1AEX on September 07, 2012, 07:50:25 PM
I had a nice chat with Phil - W2PHL today on 7290 and was really impressed with what he was running. I would venture that this is probably the best sounding Yaesu FT-847 being used with the AM mode. The MP3 file below will give you an idea of how nice it sounded in spite of the the shortwave station beating against his signal and the relatively poor band conditions on the band today. My receiver was set for a 10kc bandwidth on receive during the recording. Phil is running audio into the back panel of the FT-847 and with a 1:1 audio transformer is applying audio to the FET that functions as the RF carrier level control. I suspect that this method could be used with many other rigs such as the FT-857/897 series of rigs and perhaps even many of the ICOM rigs floating around out there. Hopefully, Phil will document this modification and post it in the Modern Rigs category here at AMfone!

Rob the pleasure was mine and your Flex sounded great.
The inspiration for the mod comes from http://www.amwindow.org/tech/htm/ts940s.htm

I believe you're right when you say this method can probably be applied to other rigs as well. I've been successful with the FT-847 and the FT-757GX. I've got an IC-706 and a FT-857 that I hope to experiment with one of these days. Yes I will make some notes on the mods and pass them along. 73 Phil

If someone had played me that recording and asked me to identify the operator, I would have guessed Nick KG2IR. To me they really sound alike. Great audio!

Very clean sound.

I am feeding audio to my little IC-718 the same way and have great reports on SSB, but I've not made any AM contacts on it yet. I've been meaning to join in on an AM roundtable (just haven't yet).

Just found and tapped this post; wonder how I missed it all this time.

1. great recording

2. great sound

Phil, I don't know what you sound like in person, but you've got what I like to call "a good distribution" of frequency response. No exaggerated peaks in the curve, and no obvious deficits.

Hope to hear you for myself some time.
