Title: 160M loopy idea
Post by: Opcom on August 18, 2012, 09:03:36 AM
W4AAB said: "A full wave loop on 160 will be around 560 feet, using the formula 1005/1.8."

My yard is quite small.. 40x40

Will this sort of thing work properly if it is not a 1-turn loop but instead is something like "4 turns of #10, 35x35 FT rectangular" ?? if so, maybe spacing of 1 FT between the turns?

crazy idea but the dipole doesn't work well there and is too noisy to use. Maybe a loop would be better.  The loop would have to be lying flat, not standing up. Maybe supported 10-15 FT high at most.

Thanks as always,

With your situation, a loaded inverted-L might be worth a try for transmitting. Run the feed into the shack and into a tuner. Use the wire on the ground for a counterpoise, not the antenna.
Use a shielded loop for receiving, they work amazingly well.

I have used an inverted L for TX and a small Loop for RX on 160M with good results. Of course a beverage is the best but not in your yard!

I agree with HG. Use a specialized receive antenna to the fight noise.

I dream of a Loop.  w0vmc has a full size 160 loop and we have probably all heard that thing once or twice.  Recently on 40 he was slamming in here when nobody else could even be heard.

I doubt you could do a spiral like that but you are not the first to wonder what would happen if you did.  I will wait to see what the others say.  What I think I can do and you could do on your lot is an 80 meter loop.

Right now I have 122ft of wire in an inverted V at 55ft.  Open wire line.   I have some pine trees that are 45 to 50 ft tall.  I have been thinking of making a loop using those pines as supports. I would have to call in a bucket truck and have everything ready for tree mounting.

The big advantage is that the antenna is always balanced since the wire is hooked back in a loop.  Never have to watch the current meters and tune the tuner for balance again.

I tried a loop on the ground, it did not work well for me but Dennis W5FRS got real good results with his. What i finally have done is this:
