Title: QST Old Radio Column features W3HM
Post by: K5UJ on June 14, 2012, 09:19:41 AM
This month's QST Old Radio column by John Dilks K2TQN covers Howard Mills' restoration and home QTH stations.

Dilks has always maintained he is "not an AMer" which is why his columns stray more toward the hardware and not the mode.

It would be nice if he more frequently profiled some members of the AM community as he has done with Howard Mills.

Not only would it have more to do with operating activity, but it would make good on assurances our part of the hobby shall be included in the ARRL's publications.

John's cover of Mills probably had more to do with his restoration abilities then his "I operate AM too". Profiling some members of the AM community in John's Old Radio/Vintage Radio Column probably would be as interesting to the QST membership as watching grass grow. AM is only a mode, and no different then other modes of the era that are covered in the column, and should not receive any special treatment coverage. If you have issues with the editorial content of QST, you should passed them on the QST Editor.

Anyone notice how the really talented radio repairers/restorers don't need any advertisement?

Your right about that Dave!  I have know and consider myself a friend of Howard's for many years.  He use to live just outside of Downingtown, PA while he was getting an advanced degree at West Chester University.  He needed a bread slicer for a tuner he was building and I had one to give him.  The rest they say is history.

Over the last several years Martha and I did business with him and made the trip down to his place.  I can say this, he will never need to advertise!  I don't know how he does what he does in getting all the gear in the wait room refurbished!

I am sure when ever he really retires we will hear him on AM a lot more.

I've had a number of nice conversations with him when he was bringing his Dodge RV to hamfests. It's set up as a walk-through radio museum, pretty cool.

Nice guy, but more than once said he wanted to be candid that he has little interest in operating AM.

So? That's true of many people. I have zero interest in most other modes, that doesn't somehow make me a threat to them or a lesser person for not promoting them.

I've known John for years, he's a great guy with a solid interest in old radio equipment. I suspect that's why his column is called the Old Radio column and not the AMer of the Month Club. Howard's operation would be the perfect subject for the audience.

IIRC his rolling museum used to be a Bookmobile. He said the reason he doesn't bring it around anymore was due to the fact that it needed new tires and the replacement cost was high. Gas prices would make it a nightmare now to take it any great distance.

He can still be found at 'fests up and down the east coast with some interesting old gear for sale.

Does anyone remember another Dilks from S. Jersey years back?  I
seem to remember a Charles, W2AHN...

He was an educator who received his PHD at the same commencement
as my mom, at UDE back in the 40's...

Edit:  Thinking about it, Charleys call could have been W3AHN
(I think back then S. Jersey was in the 3rd district) and I
remember he had a snappy phonetic for it "Adam Haddem Nxts..."

He really is.  I've got some video I need to dub from about 20 years ago, at Gaithersburg. Gary/INR rolled tape while I interviewed both Dilks and Howard Mills along the promenade.

His column for now is about the best place in the magazine for regular coverage of AM, unless of course Pete's friends in Newington want to give us our own, like they already do for parts of the hobby that are less popular than ours, cough-cough.

What particular Columns in QST do you feel are less popular then "regular coverage of AM" (whatever that means  ::))? I see no columns in QST for modes such as FM, RTTY, Packet, PSK31, Pactor, Clover, MFSK, Olivia, Throb, DominoEX, MT63, or Thor.

Do you somehow believe the ARRL membership would favor "regular coverage of AM" (whatever that means) over the current group of regular columns or as an addition to a current column? What do you base this assumption on or do you have some valid current statistics on membership needs and wants?

I would think an article about vintage AM gear would be more interesting to QST readers than that recent Vintage Radio piece about the history of the ARRL logo, but who knows.

Paul, have you considered drafting an article about vintage AM or perhaps modern AM that covers using/restoring vintage gear, modern ricebox, SDR and Class E AM, how to try out the mode, basic rig setup, great audio, mics, frequencies, etc. - a sampling of the best of modern AM - with some good photos and submit to QST for publication?

John has had a number of great articles in his "Old Radio"/"Vintage Radio" Column over the years.

John's column has been the first thing I read in QST just about as long as he's been doing it. I've read them all. Some are better than others and that's to be expected.
