Title: Brandon K5IIA and Ken AB7KT rolling into New England over the static crashes
Post by: W1AEX on March 19, 2012, 12:31:54 PM
Last night, after a pleasant chat with Mark KA2QFX and Tom KA1ZGC I tuned down the band a bit and found Brandon and Ken battling through the static on 3.870. Brandon's signal out of Louisiana was quite formidable and Ken's signal out of Nevada was a surprise given that he's using an 80 meter dipole at 30 feet. Both stations had nice clean, clear audio and were running in the +300 watt category which certainly helps. The MP3 file captures about 2 minutes of their QSO.

Nice recording Rob. I think whenever I want to work someone I will have them call you and then you can play it back to me later so's I can hear better.

Brandon's got a nice tone to his audio. Good little bump-up in the lower midrange for warmth, healthy amount of highs for clarity.

Drat! Rob.  I was tuning around just before I quit for the evening and heard you and Mark gabbing.  Shudda checked in or at least lurked

Thanks for the compliment Paul, but I think I like the sound of your SP-600 in recordings you have made much more than this new stuff! Al, the local signals were quite strong and way above the static level. It was a nice laid back conversation about building speakers. As usual, I learned some good stuff. Your wisdom would have been welcome as always!

thanks for the recording rob.. always nice to hear band conditions in differnt areas.

thanks also for the audio compliment paul, i try my best to put out a nice clean signal and also pay attention to stations around me and limit interfearance as much as possible.

this september will make 2 years of ham radio for me, and i must say i have really enjoyed it and not much more then maybe a day or two has passed sence then that i have not made atleast one transmission. haha

i have made a ton of friends and only one foe in two years so i think i am doing great.

Brandon's 2-element array puts a fantastic signal into here.  I can understand why he might be accused of using an antenna tuner by Eimac.   ;D

That two element array is a beauty. He's often as loud as many of the east coast stations at my QTH.

Sounds great here at 400 miles from you, Brandon. I have decided to move my antenna up to 80 feet and forget VHF this year( no beams on this tower). I am building antenna by Eimac :-).
