Title: Odd Q: Highest B+ *small* tube?
Post by: WBear2GCR on December 05, 2011, 08:56:25 PM
I do not know the answer.

But what is the smallest powerwise tube, preferably triode, but any, with the highest plate voltage rating??

As in smaller than a 4-65 for example. More like the 6V6 class of tube, that being around 5-10 watts.

Are there any that fit this bill? I suspect there are, but I can't think of any... the application is to swing enough voltage where voltage swing is needed, but not much power.

PS. that they might also be available now, and not completely unobtainium would be nice too... :D

Can you exceed the voltage ratings of tubes like the 6V6 or the 6SN7 or the 12AX7 and still get decent life from the tube?  I'm assuming audio amp here

Maybe a 6S4,

2200v Peak plate, 8.5w pd

Also the 3C24,

2Kv, 25w

I'd go for any of the smaller beam tubes designed for horizontal deflection output, with peak voltages of 4000-8000V. The rating is for 15us, but quite high continuous voltages are possible under controlled conditions. I have used a 6CD6 as a high voltage amplifier with 3KV on the anode and very low current appropriate to its dissipation.

Next, the 6BQ5 has been run in GG at 750V in a Wawasee linear amplifier.

For purists, the beautiful little 20-watt Eimac 15E triode IIRC is rated 12.5KV.

The 6BK4 triode can take 30KV, but define 'small' here on an AM transmitter site!

There are also tubes like the acorn types that can be run pretty hot as self excited oscillators.

Several interesting types with high voltage ratings are shown in the PDF attachment.

For very small tubes, the subminiature types are interesting but their close element spacing precludes very high voltages.

8874

Slightly more than 2 inches tall and less than 1.75 inches in diameter.

2200v, 350 ma, 400 watts dissipation.

Take  a look at the 6JH5.

That's a great tube, Thanks for bringing it up! A beam triode! That's one of those where in the TV set the unused pins adjacent to the plate pin were left without contacts in the socket for added arc resistance.

how about a 25-T or 24-G  ??? Both are about the same physical size as a 6V6.

Patrick,
that little amp block with the 15-Es is pretty kool lookin! ! !

Bear,
What do you want to use it for? ? ?

High swing driver tube, Slab.

Assume the tube it drives is unity gain, you need big swing, not much power.
Shhhh...  ::)

Hmmmmmm............. How bout a 12B4 ? ? ? ? ?

Nice little vertical deflection tube, low plate resistance, fairly descent power capacity for a small tube.

Makes for lots munky swing! ! !

B+ max is 1000 peak and typical is only 150... probably not gonna swing da monkey!  8)

How about a 2C26A transmitting triode?
Size of a 6V6, octal, 6.3vheater, max plate 3.5kv, 10W plate,

Yes, I have one for you.

Bill

Bill,

Thanks for the offer, but I need mo' dan wun!

Pretty much they have to be "available" at some sort of reasonable price.
Not sure that one is?

At this point I have a few examples of some of the suggested tubes coming my way, so that is good. It will be a goodly long while before I can try them out. :(

Other suggestions are appreciated.
