I am learning we've lost quite a few of the 10 meter guys since the last sunspot cycle.

Today I spoke with Andy, W5QXX on his homebrew rig that he built in 1948. Pair of 812s into a single 4-250A.  He parked it 8 years ago where he last worked on 10M and just now was firing it up again.

He told me he was thinking about Jack, KH6CC at Hilo, Hawaii, who passed away a few years ago, apparently. I pulled the card I had on him, remembering we had talked many times.

Sure enough, he had been active on 10M since 1935, and said of himself "I had to be one of the last people to convert over to sideband."

Even 10 years ago, some of the older guys I talked with would become melancholy sometimes, saying it was probably going to be their last sunspot cycle.  It struck me sad to think of it that way.

Steve,

Just a minor housekeeping detail on the photo of "Jack" W2NRM.  His name is wrong on the thumbnail. He was actually Howard Jack although he always went by Howie on the air.  Howie was the founder and original editor of the (AM) Press Exchange newletter circa 1980. He lived not far from me in NJ and he was a fixture on both 75 and 10 meter AM in the NYC area.

73, Jim
