Title: M5AFD - Dave in Shrewsbury, England on 29.010 MHz
Post by: W1AEX on October 24, 2011, 02:58:12 PM
I had a very nice chat with Dave - M5AFD this afternoon on 10 meters. He is new to AM but has a very commanding signal. I expect he will be a fixture with the beautiful sounding signal he is producing with a Yaesu FT-5000 MP into an Acom 2000 amplifier to a 3 element STEPPIR.

Dave gave me permission to put him up on YouTube. The signal looks as good as it sounds!

Incredible. Super signal and excellent audio (much better than, as he says, reasonable)!

I sure like "watching" while I listen, Rob. Thanks for the latest YouTube post.

Excellent reception, there and in the audio-only file.Plus it was already 2:30PM Eastern time !!!

Back in Cycle 23, signals from the UK and Europe were typically sliding down by about 1pm, and things started shifting to the west of here.

I believe Dave is feeding the FT-5000 MP with external audio from the brief station description he gave and apparently the DSP can be adjusted to allow just under 8 kc [probably 3.8 plus 3.8] when running AM. He was driving the Acom 2K with about 10 watts of drive power which would produce a carrier level of about 300 watts. I was looking at the specs for that amp, not that I could afford one, and it's quite a monster in the ratings department. The 3 element STEPPIR would no doubt produce quite a potent signal with the antenna pointed in our direction! We chatted for about 20 minutes without any noticeable fading and when I signed with Dave he was bombarded with calls from across the US. I think he was enjoying the sound of AM and hope he shows up regularly!

By the way, take a look at Dave's QRZ page. Click on the picture in the upper right to see his beautiful estate in the country! I could definitely see myself sipping a cup of tea while sitting in that rear porch before working through a few grueling pileups!

Looks like it would be a good idea not to piss off Dave.  ;)

Yes indeed. I think Dave can take care of himself. I also suspect that if he needed to he could probably pick up that BMW and slide it into a tight parking space!

He looks like he is made to handle boat anchors!  This guy needs to put a vintage station together with some heavy iron!  I wish he lived nearby so he could help me move some of my stuff around.
