So sorry to hear this, John.  He looked like a great and faithful buddy.

Dogs are the best creatures on the planet. It's such a heart breaker when they go.

RIP Petey.

John,

My condolences to you on losing Petey.  Petey was lucky to have such a great owner because unfortunately a lot of animals don't have as happy a life.

It has been 3 years since I had to have my German Shepherd Heidi put down due to medical issues from her advanced age but I still expect to hear her disapproving "eeping" sound every time I take a corner too fast in the pickup.

Thanks, everyone.

He had skin cancer on his gum, which grew into his sinuses and was essentially inoperable.  He didn't seem to be in any pain, even to the last, but he was sneezing blood and his choppers were all coming loose.  We decided we had to let him go before it became painful for him.

Dogs are the best - always loyal, always happy to see you no matter how crappy your day has been.

Dogs are the best - always loyal, always happy to see you no matter how crappy your day has been.

Ten years old.
They just don't live long enough, do they.
You go through life, and yes, they are right there with you through good and bad.

You just come to rely on them for that, and not always do we take stock of the amount of time of THEIR life that they've spent with you.

It's awful hard to say good bye.

It's tough to realize they're getting older, too, with less time ahead than behind.

I think you met "Leo" when you were over to the house. He's an older guy that his original owner just didn't feel like keeping, after he had already given the first 7-8 years of his life to them.

Wonderful, mellow fellow, great to have around.  It baffles me why anyone would give him up.

We are trying to make the rest of his life SO good that he will think the best part is NOW, and not where he used to be.

Our other dog agrees, and he's totally on board with the program.

Inner Peace:

If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment ,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

...Then You Are Probably .........The Family Dog!

And you thought I was going to get all spiritual didn't you..

Man, that just plain sucks! ! ! ! !  Petey was a kool dog!! I liked him a lot.

Those were the exact symptoms that Henry (our lab) had before we had to have him put down. Like Petey, we had him for 10 years too.

Bummer John. I hate like hell seeing a faithful companion go. Especially a boxer. I have 2 and Patches, (very similar to Petey except with the patch on the other eye) is getting up there. She is 9 and has had her share of tumors, knee replacement, along with a broken toe. Boxers are different breed and have their own unique personality.  :'(

John,

I am very sorry to that you had to put Petey down.  I grew up with Dog's as pets and they provided fantastic companionship.   I wish you strength during the tuff days ahead.  Have comfort in that you were able to let him go before he was in serious pain.

One thing about dogs;
You can lock'em up for a time and when you go back to let'em out they'll jump for joy and lick ya in the face and be happy to see ya ......

Try that with your girl or wife!! :o

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary...

Day 983 of my captivity...

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.  They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape.  In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet.   I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of.  However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight.  I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event.   However, I could hear the noises and smell the food.  I overheard that my confinement was due to  the power of 'allergies.'  I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking.  I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches.   The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return.  He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant.  I observe him communicating with the guards regularly.  I am certain that he reports my every move.  My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe.

For now................

Thanks, Bruce.  He was a purebred Boxer.  White boxers are somewhat rare, and aren't suitable for judging nor breeding.  Often they are deaf or blind.  Petey however was extremely healthy til he got the big C.

Very sorry for your loss, Johnny. Petey was truly a cool friend and you were fortunate to share his time here on earth. He was funny to watch, funny to listen to, even funny just to look at. I remember how he'd want to play whenever we'd come into the house with those 4 long legs just a-flyin. I recall he watched you a lot, I suspect just waiting for an opening or invitation to cut loose.

I thought of him last week, and always will whenever I open a bottle of that Lagunitas IPA you turned me on to. Petey's on the cap.

Dogs live short lives,  but they pack lot's of love and affection into the time they have. They're so much smarter than us that way.

I believe they stick around just long enough for use to love them well, but not long enough for us to take them for granted.

They mourn for us if we pass first as well. My fathers dog still searches for him, and Dad's been gone 6 months now.

Very sorry your bud passed along John.  To me I have always preferred one each who I raised together meaning one Dog and One Cat. But Its rare when we can have what we want. When I was young it was almost always one Dog only.
A friend of Guys W1FRM sent me a short article which I keep on my ham webpage;  http://www.hamelectronics.com/k1deu/pages/family/dogs_cats.html (http://www.hamelectronics.com/k1deu/pages/family/dogs_cats.html)

Your thread made me wonder about the age of my oldest cat (of four).

Turns out he just turned 10 yrs.

Cats tend to live a bit longer, and at 10 he isn't showing any signs of age yet.

We had a cat who died at age 21 a few years ago. She was pretty frail the last couple years.

When she was about 20 I remember one night hearing a horrible howling coming from the back yard. It sounded like the cat was dying a  terrible death.

I went down stairs to the back door, and there was the old cat with a mouse in her mouth.

As soon as I opened the door, saw the mouse, and called her a good cat, she was quiet.

She just wanted to show the head of her household that she could still hunt.
