Title: Collins 51J4
Post by: KC4ALF on May 13, 2011, 08:19:53 AM
Just aquired a pair of Collins 51J4's. Cosmetically and mechanicly sound except tuning slugs in both rigs are broken. Any thoughts on repair? Was thinking of using something like water soluable Loctite to "glue" the pieces back together. Question if successful how much will it affect tuning?

Try Fair radio they may have slugs for the R390 which I bet are the same.
I have glued cores with success using super glue. You will need to retune the rack

The R-390 slugs aren't as long.

Super glue would work fine, but make sure you smooth the joint between the broken pieces so the slug doesn't bind in the core.

The cores usually break because the steel center post rusts and swells up.  As mentioned above, just glue them back together and lightly sand the exterior so that the slug doesn't bind in the form.  Then realign.

Once upon a time I was working on an R-388 and found two broken slugs.  "Take the bottom panel off, retrieve the broken pieces and glue them" I thought.  Found the broken pieces, but...another and another, way more than the pieces I needed!  Checked every other slug, none broken. Evidently some depot or shop had repaired broken slugs before me, and had just installed new ones and left the broken pieces lying inside. :(

If you can't find the broken off parts, at least a few years ago Fair Radio said they had pull-out slug and rod assemblies available.

Tnx guys. All suggestions appreciated. Will try  to repair and will check with fair to see what they have. KI4JSE is at the Aberdeen show and will look to see if anyone has any parts there for the R-388 while he is picking up schock Mounts for the RT/68 and the URR/5 so I can finally install them in the 51 M37 Dodge. Mounted Antennas and Cabeling yesterday. Woul'd like to take it up along the AT on blue mntn and mate the URR/5 with the TCS-12 xmtr and the whip. At 2550ft it shoul'd do well to the NE even pw.
