Title: Need info of school in NYC
Post by: w1vtp on April 28, 2011, 02:49:34 PM
Here's an email I just got from an old friend Chuck, KA1BJ. Do any of you guys know what school my friend is talking about?

"Hi Al,

Thirty years ago my brother-in-law became a ham, extra class, and bought an Icom 765 transceiver. he spent lots of time listening but never made one transmission. So now, after all these years, has decided that he want to get rid of the Icom. He'd like to give it away to someone or some organization that would use it. I thought of that school in New York city that was always looking for donations of equipment but I don't know their name or address.

If they are still around could you find them somewhere and let me know how to contact them?

Thanks,

Chuck"

Why not donate it to a local radio club or even a local high school radio club in his area.

It's a shame that Chuck's BIL never made a transmission.

Not really. Not even in the same league. I've seen the work.

One day the IRS may decide to knock on his door...

By this time, every school in NYC ought to have had a ham station, or else the ham shack in whatever school he is/was in would have filled the place. However, I have no first hand information on this... so he may be completely legit.

They have been begging for 30-40 years or more, its a racket. What radios they get go right to fleabay and elsewhere for top dollar.

That's hard to tell. There are so many schools in NYC and many of them have/had radio clubs at one time or another.
I'm thinking it could be Bronx  High School of Science or Stuyvesant, both are technically oriented schools but then again could be another one.

All it is is Junior HS 22. The rest is a money making racket.

Yes, when I grew up in the area in the 50's just about every HS had a club station.

I don't know if this is still the case but this "club" maintains a presence in the flea market at Dayton.  In the 1990s I bought a Viking Ranger I from them for $15.00.  It worked too!

Of course it had a few extra holes in the front panel.
