Title: The Turkeys Are Out
Post by: K1JJ on April 02, 2011, 03:16:41 PM
The wild turkeys raided the bird feeder area today. I counted 18.

I usually pile sunflower seeds on the ground for the squirrels and ground feeding birds.  I'll bet some of the females were pregnant, as they usually have a big bunch of chicks following in a month or so.

The big males looked like peacocks when they spread their tails.

Yaz would have loved to get out and chase them. He was at the window making gurgling sounds... :-)

Interesting how they walk in long single file in the woods, just like military patrols.

Cool, Tom.
I was out this morning before sunrise and was calling to the flock here in the hood.

Checkout the goobler's fans. Ifn all the tail feathers are the same length around the fan they're 2 year olds or more.
The Jakes (1 year old male) will have the middle 3 or 4 tail feathers longer than the rest. A 1:1 ratio of Jakes and gooblers is a good sign of a healthy flock.

We have Merriam turkeys here in Tum Tum.....Large flocks..Been around about 10 yrs...When they were first planted, we were allowed to hunt one Tom in the Spring...Now we are allowed 3 turkeys per year...One in spring one in Fall and one from bumper hunting.......Never seen a pregnant turkey....Which came first the turkey or the egg?

Used have gobs of them here.  But having neighbors with obnoxious pets chased the wild life out.  Always wanted to bag one and smoke it.  Have had smoked wild turkey before. It's pretty good.

heheheh....   It didn't even occur to me.   ;D

Interesting on the identification of the ages, Bud.  This flock looked pretty robust and well organized.  They arrived in small groups with the lookouts watching for threats.

Modern dinosaurs.

Compared to those I have seen down here those pictures make them look the size of quail.  :)

i would think they would be a bit tough to eat if you didn't cook them properly, smoked turkey jerky sounds good
