Post by: KB2WIG on March 26, 2011, 08:23:56 PM
Ten is open.....

Ther's a corntester , k6VO, in Irvine, CA, doing the contest thing and is being heard nicely into C NY.

Thars nothing heard on 29.0001

If yer not happy with the lower bands, maybe give the upper stuff a try.

10 is very open today. 28.300 to 28.500 is packed and signals are strong at 1800z.

Heard a couple of west coast AM stations at 29.000. I tried but no success.  Need to pay my 10m ant some attention. SWR is over 3:1.

I worked a K6TOX and W7BW on 10 just above 29.0 around 2:45 pm today.  The K6 was calling CQ about the same time I was, and wb2icq snagged him first, and I called him when they finished. The band fell out while I was in qso with the W7 and I didn't see anything else on the panadapter for about 10 minutes, then I moved down to 17.

I was running the flex 5K and the titan amp making about 125 watts and got S9 reports. They were running an apache  and an FT1000 barefoot respectively and were S7-8.

Was nice to make a few contacts on 10. I could see several other AM carriers around 29.0 while in QSO, but they were all gone when the band dropped out.

Ther's prop on 10 a lot mo than people realize. What i've found interesting is a tour of the beacon 'band' at night. I've copied stuff for time periods of an hour or more at 1 AM.......   who wudda thunk.

I had a nice chat today at round 1:30pm with Ron K0ETD who was in Tucson. He was running an Apache and was S-7 to S-9 in CT. I was running 5 watts into the 250 foot open-wire center-fed and received an S-9 report. The path held up fine for about 10 minutes and then things got a little wobbly. Haven't seen anything else up there this afternoon.

Had a FB QSO with VK4VN, Steve in Brisbane for about 15 minutes on 28.990 ths afternoon at 5pm Eastern.  I live about 50 mi east of Charlotte, NC. I am running a converted Johnson Messenger II CB at 3 watts output into a single 8875 linear final at about 30 watts output into a delta loop at 50 feet.  This is the first contact I've made on the rig since I converted it 2 years ago and have been waiting for the band to come around.  By the way, you guys wanting a FB antenna find an old V-Quad Maco beam, otherwise a delta loop with reflector, shorten it about a foot, tune the gamma, mount it horizontal and have fun.
Can't wait to get my DX-100 back to life and on the band.

I truely envy the last two posters as up here there is nil for AM activity on or around 29mhz..SSB down lower however is spectacular!..no uh uh no new countries yet but the likes of MW SV9 PA ON 9H SV 5B and even YB0 grace my logbook..missed the E21......so have not been reporting as this is an AM website but darn if it just won't appear here..there's always tommorow..

That was W6WRE, John near Prescott Arizona. I'm on a friends small sailboat working our way up the east coast from Oriental, NC. Today when I made that contact with him, I was in the Virginia Cut about 25 miles south of Norfolk, VA. I'm running an ICOM 703 with 10 watts PEP (2.5 watt carrier) and a buddistick antenna clamped to the stern rail. I had a nice QSO with John.

Yesterday I worked Oklahoma, Munich, Costa Rica, and Texas on ssb.

I've been calling each day on 21.420 and 29.0. When John was on 29, I called up 10 and 20 khz. I hope to be on daily so keep an eye out for me. I'm QRP, but the 703 has some compression so the audio is fairly punchy.

I heard a couple of stations calling, including someone on 29 under John when he turned it over to the w4 he worked before me.

Wow.  I'm listening on my HPSDR to the CB band between 27.005 and 27.085 Mhz, beaming west on the triple 10M stack.  There's stations from northern Calif crashing in right now at about 6:30PM East coast time. Some are S9+30.  Some funny raps. Those guys certainly make use of the band. The Derb would love it.

I tuned up to the ham band and don't hear a peep.   Goes to show that the band can be open but nobody on to know about it.

We might have been able to work each other John if the timing was wright. I worked stations in AL, GA, IL, PA and the Carolinas alll within a 90 minutes span from here near Tampa. I'm hopeful conditions will stay this way the most of the time for the two few months.

Maybe would could start a 29 MHz net with stations within a 1000 mile radius of each other, Everyone may not be able to hear the enitre roundtable, but hopefully most of it. I'm game, deal me in!

Good E-layer condx today including double hop. Today on 29.000 I worked between 18:000 and 19:15 UTC:

KE1FT - Mass.
K1JJ - Conn.
W3FJJ - Md.
KF4DX - N.C.

Nice to have 10 open for July 4th! QSB was moderate with all stations being at least readability four.

Basically for now as of 5:09 PM EDT but check back later. You might be surprised. There's also a nightly net on 29.02, I believe, somewhere around the Wisconsin area.

Not necessarily in that order.

John, I think the deal is that 10 is open.....if you have a yagi or three up on a tower.  I tried it with my dipole at 35 feet and was SOL.

Title: Re: 10 M open
Post by: KX5JT on July 04, 2011, 06:03:24 PM
Nah, I've made contacts, just not making them today.  If beams and amps are required... I don't consider that "open"... it's either opening or closing!

Seeing how I only have about 45 minutes left before time for work, I've moved to 14.338 in hopes of snagging an AM qso or three... so far just sidebanders up and down from me.

John, I think the deal is that 10 is open.....if you have a yagi or three up on a tower.  I tried it with my dipole at 35 feet and was SOL.

My contacts today were via my SteppIR ground mounted vertical with 48 radials. I don't have any type of beam/tower due to HOA CCRs. I think it is more of being at the right place at the right time with others also being there as well. When I was working 29 Mc, the beacons below were as strong as S-7 in some cases. As we all know when six and ten are open, they are open even with the most modest station.

Oh I just tried during the wrong two hours this afternoon.  I had to scoot of to work.  I even CQ'ed AM on 14.338 for a half hour, no joy, then moved down to 7.290 and I could hear Dave W9AD in the noise probably chatting with someone else.  Couldn't quite make out everything he was saying.

Talking to Ka5rhk in DeQueen and Kd6os in texas on 29.010
It would be great to work KL7 from the UK. I managed VE6 and W7 this evening at s9 on 29MHz and then did the same on 21.420 at 18:00 utc.
I'll be around on 10M from 11:00utc tomorrow.
