Title: How cold is it?
Post by: Ed/KB1HYS on January 23, 2011, 09:32:58 AM
It's so cold that the flame froze on the match this morning when I went to light the stove!

Seriously though, it  was -6 here this morning, and has just 'warmed up' to about 1 since the sun came up.

Good Time to get on the air!

Tube equipment's efficiency approaches 100% if you are using the heat produced to keep from freezing you lips to the microphonium!

So cold that people are throwing shoes at Al Gore.,,_

Got to 5 degrees early this morning based on the Westerly RI Airport NOAA WX 3 day history.  Was actually down to 1 last weekend.  Going to be colder tonight....

This is quite the winter. Many hikers around here are wearing snow shoes - very popular this year with a base of over 30" of snow. Just like a ski resort.

It's interesting that right on schedule we are getting the coldest temps of the year now. The Earth has a mass inertia of about 30 days, so the shortest day of the year, Dec 20th + 30 days = about January 20th, right now.  We will look back at the yearly temperature chart and see it bottom over the next few days - most likely.

BTW,  It's so cold that the local flasher was caught describing himself to women... ;D

Last night was -2.8.
We had -9.5 a few nights ago.

Tonight, the forecast low for central Verminmont is -28   :o

The chickens really aren't going to be happy.

It was 1 when I went to bed last night and about 10 now.
Cat has cabin fever and only lasts about 10 minutes outside. no where for her to go. Need to fill the bird feeders. The average degree days were way up in the fall so it is get even time

It's not over for you Easties yet. Look at this GFS outlook for February 5.

Looks like another snowy noreaster brushing the I-95 corridor followed by temps near -30C approaching New England. Look where the -20C / -4F line is...Covering all of NJ, NY and PA. Warmer in the Yukon than Tennessee.

California looks like a great place to be next month.

This is an outlook for two weeks out, not a precise forecast.

My Global Warming Theory...........Where is Al BTW.................

The cold air from the North Pole is LEAKING down to us and further South.
If there was a way to keep all this cold air where it belongs, then there would not be any warrming up of the perma-frost and galciers, etc etc etc..........like keeping the refrigerator door opened
Maybe those HAARP transmitters should be turned off. And China turn off their air defense system. Some huge RF generator that wipes out a lot of the 40M band in SE Asia.

It's about 14 out now but it's supposed to go down to -13 tonight. I'm excited for that and will be planning to take an evening walk to take in that wonderfully crisp air.

Air this cold affects my breathing.
Hard for me to breath in cold air.
This is 'staying inside WX'.
I have the woodalene stove cranking and it is a nice 76 degrees in here.
I'll get on 50.4 AM at 5PM and talk to the locals with a nice glass of 'red stuff'

Thought about snow shoeing down by the river. Then decided that hot coffee and listening in to the QRP net while putting around the shack was better.

As long as the truck starts in the morning, all will be good.

Ah, what a bunch of wussies.

Has everyone forgot the record temps this summer?  My vegetable garden wouldn't produce anything because of the heat. Got one meal's worth of green beans the entire season, and the tomatoes that ripened were about the size of grapes.

Everybody has been so spoilt by the unseasonably mild winters the past 15-20 years, that when we finally have normal winter once again, y'all scream out in agony.

I'll wager an 807 that everyone will be bitchin' about the heat this coming summer.

Of course, in schools and in shopping malls, they over-correct the temperature.  In the winter when it is freezing outside, you swelter in a tee-shirt, but in the summer you have to wear a sweater to stay comfortable inside.  I wonder how many incandescent bulbs it would take to waste that much energy.

Im paying almost $600/month for oil based upon yesterdays delivery at $3.15/gal. Id think that with electric heat being more efficient I should use a few of those hi tech room heaters and bump the oil burner thermostat back to 65 in areas I dont have to worry about pipes freezing.

Thanksgiving we were at the beach QTH. Electric was $7 a day for everything and it was in the 20s at night. The house was 50 when I arrived on a Wednesday and the hot water was cold. Electric heat isn't that bad.
I've used about 200 gallons of fuel oil since Dec 1 in Enfield

Meanwhile, we're running 20-odd degrees warmer than average. Not a flake of snow on the ground. I gess it depends on the deal of the cards.

Denver Forecast:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 60. North northwest wind between 5 and 7 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 61. Southwest wind between 5 and 8 mph becoming calm.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 55. Southwest wind between 5 and 8 mph becoming calm.

After 2 days of the "rain" that was called for earlier this week, we now have about a foot of that white crap on the ground. We were told by the local prognosticators not to worry as this was going to be a "non event".  ::) Yesterday brought snowflakes the size of quarters, blowing snow and near white-out blizard condituons! We even got thunder-snow! When it was all said and done we ended up getting about a foot od heavy wet stuff on or stuck to everything. My crappy brown stuff feedline was about 3" in diameter with that crap stuck to it. The antenner was about the same.

They were saying on the local news that y'all boyz up in New England were going to get hammered worse than us!!

Well it's time to go out and shovel some of the "rain" out of my driveway so I can try to get to work ::)  ::)

The last 100 years (or so) of stable wx patterns is an anomoly in the overall record.

We're finally getting back up to near or slightly above normal for the next week. It's been hovering around 50 here the last couple days, 58-60 predicted for Saturday.

December ran 10-20 degrees below normal and January has been 5-10 below so far. More snow than usual too, though nothing is left now. Looks like the Northeast is getting another typical winter. It's just so much easier to see it on the news rather than out the window.   ;)

Geological records show the Earth has had major environmental changes, from the carboniferous era (very high CO2 atm then) to the Ice ages (yes more than one).  Climate change is a natural unavoidable phenomenom that some people have figured out how to make a Mega-buck huckstering "Green Energy" with fear mongering about 'The End of the World' etc.

Instead of trying to prevent the unpreventable, we should be spending money and efforts trying to figure out ways of surviving the changes.  Or will our subservience to Global special interests finally be a species level Darwin Award?

Excellent comments Ed!  The scary part of all the Al Gore phenomena is the envisioned carbon credit economy embraced by the greenies which stands to make the hucksters rich and everyone else struggling just to afford any form of energy.  While environmentalism is certainly not all bad, it is the extremists and the opportunists who are leading us down the path of ultimate catastrophe.  Unfortunately, they will continue to exploit those who have sincere concerns and appreciation for the environment.
