Title: DX-60 Mods / Mics
Post by: W9ZSL on January 07, 2011, 02:48:47 PM
Hello!  I have 2 DX-60s both an "A" and "B".  I read over the discussion about modification to get 100% modulation.  I'd like to look into it.  I saw a couple of e-addresses but am not sure where to go to find the info.  Any help?

Also I'm sure this has been asked before but I have a number of mics both dynamic and condenser in my recording studio.  Any suggestions how I can use these either by running them into my mixer then to the DX-60 or perhaps by using a 5534 chip as a pre-amp? The board has an unbalanced hi-z output.  I tried it with a -30db "T" pad but lost a lot of mids and highs.  I had a couple of QSOs but the sig reports weren't all that great.  I'd like to pick up a D-104 mic but would rather use what I have.  As for CW, both rigs work just fine.  TNX, 73!

Hi Mike,

I use DX-60 original model, ser #103, chassis dated 4/62 by the original builder in permanent marking.

The speech amp uses a 12ax7 and requires a Hi-Z input.  I have used a non-amplified D-104 and it sounded okay, like it should.

I applied the WC3K audio mods and a PTT.  The audio sound way better now.

Wanting even better audio, I now use a Marshall MXL-990 condensor microphone into a Behringer MDX-1600 processor then a small Berhinger mixer.  I have no problem with audio response.  I even had to dial the audio pot on the chassis back a bit from where it was set for the D-104.

I would have to agree with most people on this board and say an oscilliscope is necessary for proper adjustment of the transmitter.  It tells the whole story.

AT THE VERY LEAST, transmit into a dummy load while monitoring your audio with a headset on a nearby receiver until it sounds clean and loud.  OSCILLISCOPES still tell a better story though.

FB OM!  I have a Fostex 450 as well as the Tascam so I can use either one.  As far as processing, there is no shortage.  I even have a CBS audimax here which I plan to use both in the studio and perhaps on the air.  One of my projects is building a 300 watt rig using parts salvaged from a Gates BC-1T.  That happens to be the first xmtr I broadcasted on (DJ for over 30 years).  In fact, I went on the air on WOBT here in Rhinelander, WI on my 16th. birthday which will be 49 years ago this Monday.  I got my first ticket about 1961, let it expire about '67 because I got into recording.  Took the test last January and got the new one in Feb.  Original call was K9ZSL but that was taken.  Applied for and got the vanity W9ZSL.  Close enough.

Thanks for the info!

Mike

Thanks Steve!

Soon as I get my modulation where I want it I'll be on the AM net on Saturday mornings.  Of course my ant is only up 20 feet right now so that will limit my DX.  Come spring I'll get the center up to 30 for an inverted "V".  That studio shot is old. Lots of changes since then.  By the way if you ever heard of "Full Compass" down near Madison, I was one of the three original owners.  We started out as a recording studio about 1971.

Yep, I've received their catalogs over the years. I think I've even ordered some stuff from them in the past.
