Title: AM Transmitter Rally 2010 Results [updated: 4-Jan-2011] !!
Post by: steve_qix on December 31, 2010, 04:49:34 PM
These are the final results from the 2010 AM Transmitter Rally - updated as of 4-Jan-2010

States, category winners, total scores.

Individual log counts for all stations, and comments are in another reply to this thread (find out what they said about YOU).  The board software will not allow me to enter a single post of over (some number (not 30000)) bytes.  I put the comments in another reply to this thread.

Some people did not tell me what they were running, so no category.

No one entered in category B (broadcast transmitter)!

One comment shows someone running a "DATSON RANGER".  Datson? (see the comments post)

This shows an AMAZING success!!!!  I wrote software to tabulate various results from the logs.

First a staggering over 440 DIFFERENT stations were worked, all on AM.  This is just great - and a real testimonial to how much AM is really out there, considering this was only a 1 day event.  This number was gleaned from all logs submitted.

It appears as if every one of the contiguous states were involved, and of course Mexico and Canada.  There were a number of other countries worked as well.

30 people submitted formal logs.  Most logs were received via Email in CSV format, and for this I am truely thankful.  Those logs received in paper form were typed in so we would have accurate results.

Every unique call sign and how many times that call showed up in the various logs submitted, with comments.  There was certainly wide participation!

Here are the results

30 files processed.

All Rally submissions sorted by points:

Steve,

Great to see the results, and I really enjoyed the rally last year and hope there will be another one this year. We worked it QRP portable from a cabin running an IC-703 on batteries and would like to do that again along with some participation from home base.

One question, I know we worked a half a dozen stations, but my call shows up down near the bottom showing having worked only one. Is that because we didn't show up in the other stations logs? (just from memory I know we worked KC2UFU, AB2RA, W6XR, along with the other YL who was holding down the frequency with Kerri, and pretty sure we worked WB2ERS )

Set a date, we'll be there.  ;D

Happy New Year

Steve,
How do you wind up with a submission from N3DRB when he has been in the hospital for months?? Or is this from last years corntest??  ???  ???

I took a look - the only log your call shows up in is WX3K's log.  But, I know for myself that if there is a very large group, it's tough to write all of the calls down.  I usually find I miss a few here and there.  Of course, we only got logs from 29 stations (which really isn't bad!), so that's probably another reason.  I know I worked lots of stations during the AMTR, but I only showed up in 7 logs (actually 8, someone put me down as WA1QIX instead of W1E)....

It was fun, that's for sure.

Regards,

Steve

This is the contest from last February.  Now that I have the software more or less in place, it will be quick to get future results from possible future AMTRs  :D

Was surprised to see my call show up since I was working tag team from WB3HUZ. Guess someone wrote me in when I identified myself personally. Funny stuff.  :)

I say have another event, so long as it won't ruin anyone's life or provoke legal action. It's all about the FUN factor and aside from the participation info gleaned from logs, who cares about scores?

Indeed, and we *had* fun. I had a buddy over to work the FYBO qrp cw contest and tuned up to show him some AM and he got hooked and we spent the rest of the afternoon working the rally instead.  Definitely more fun.  ;D

Steve, did you get my log? Was sent as PM on here, and via email on your class E site. Doesn't matter, just curious. Let's just do it again and have fun.

Hi Kevin,

I checked my email - no log found.  If you still have it, I'll certainly include yours with the results, and that would push us up to an even 30 logs submitted  :D

I see that my call is listed as W9GT in one of the lists.  I was using W9T for the rally.
Lots of fun...would enjoy participating in another one this year.  Thanks for your efforts, Steve.  Hopefully, if you have the software completed to analyze results, it won't be such a chore the next time.

Hi Steve, I think you're just kidding  ;D  But, to make sure, I looked at the log you emailed, and it is correct.  You, I believe, worked the most states which really increased your total score.  Those states make a big difference !

You could have been a contender.

Be like Acim, YU1FJK. Every time I called him he would immediately come back in Yugo accent with, "Tom, I am #1 in world. Whirl-wide CQ contest this last time. #1 in whirl!!"

So after awhile I would pretend to forget - when I called him I'd axe, "Acim, how did you do in last CQ whirl-wide?"   ;D ;D

No one "won" the "B" category. If you're going to have it in February again, it might already be to late to get it listed in the QST contest calendar but you probably still could get some exposure in Electric Radio. More participants need to send in logs.

I will put on mine:

Well, when Steve goes back through and adds in the country multipliers, we'll walk away with a handy lead. We'll be famous. Whirl-wide will be a footnote to our score. We'll become known as the Corntestenators. People will think we operated from Cob Island.

Well, you could put that HUZ was #1 in the AMTR in working the most states AND the most countries!!!!

W9GT received some cudos on very good operating practice, and facilitating good operating in general.

Tom JJ got several reports of being the strongest station heard.

But now the HUZman is gone, so that probably invalidates all previous results. You'll have to reschedule the event so the HeXman can make a run at it. With the shorter call, he's bound to clean house!  ;D

I see derb is still in the running....wazzup?   I vote to have the heavy metal rally again...We should start earlier so that there will be more daylight time on the west coast for 20 meter operation....Did the name get changed from HEAVY METAL to AM TRANSMITTER RALLY???   Is there a standard computer form we can use to log the event to make it easier for the scorekeeper?..... Thanks to all who make this possible...I had a great time...Steve

Heavy Metal Rally is in December. The reporting of this first AM Transmitter Rally was held in February 2010.

Oh, these are two different events and with different purposes.  The Heavy Metal Rally is pretty much a night time event (it doesn't start until evening) primarily focusing on large tube type AM transmitting equipment [hence the name, Heavy Metal] and encouraging people with such equipment to operate it, and make AM contacts using this equipment.

The AM Transmitter Rally is a 20 hour event (the event starts at around sunrise) and whose primary purpose is to get people on AM talking with other amateurs who are also using AM (the QSO party aspect), to call attention to AM and AM transmitters, and to be all inclusive of any type of AM or AM-capable transmitting equipment.  There are many categories of equipment which are specifically created to highlight the many types of AM equipment in use today.

Hope this helps :-)

For the purpose, will "AM" be defined as having two sidebands or is it permissible to emit only one sideband along with the carrier?

Noting some military rigs are carrier+upper in the "AM" position and can not readily emit the lower SB.

The information might affect participants' choices of equipment.

thank you.

That is excellent of you to arrange this!

As usual I may fail to be on the air, however a friend across town has a real antenna (tm) and a HB 250TH on 40M and a HB PP 808 TX on 20M both cathode modded - but he works almost 24x7 when the XYL is not scheduling or scolding.

The description of "AM" left out the sidebands portion for this very reason  ;)  Thanks for mentioning it, though.  I think there are some commercial multimode rigs (older ones) that have the same issue.  As long as there's enough carrier to properly demodulate the signal, it's am  ;D

Thanks and Regards,

Steve

Hi Pete,

Where did you get these dates?  I can't seem to find a ham radio event calendar anywhere!

We could do February 5th, which is appximately the same day as last year's event - and that seemed to work out well.

Steve:
Ignore the Classic Exchange dates I posted. Duh! They are for 2010.
AM QSO Party (AWA) is February 19 - February 20, 2011

Like I did, you can go here to the ARRL Contest Corral which includes ARRL and non ARRL contests. Unfortunately, so far they have only listed January 2011. Normally, they list several on coming months but they're probably still gathering data for the new year.
http://www.arrl.org/contest-calendar

However, even if you use the 2010 info, it can give you a general idea as to what contests generally appear in that month. With some careful extrapolation, you can probably figure out what weekends to avoid.

Good break down, Steve. All the info anyone could ask for.

My vote is for Feb 5th as the date. Worked well last year, even called in a huge snowstorm for the mid-Atlantic region. Just hold the snow off until evening this time. ;)

My vote is for April 16 when I re-open  my camp. It also spreads the two venue's out a bit.

It looks like yours was a great success Steve, kind of what heavy metal was about but seems to me that it lost it's luster.

I think it's all about enthusiasm and that is made by talking it up.

Title: Re: AM Transmitter Rally 2010 Results (UPDATED) !!
Post by: w8khk on January 04, 2011, 02:34:06 PM

The AM Transmitter Rally is a 20 hour event (the event starts at around sunrise) and whose primary purpose is to get people on AM talking with other amateurs who are also using AM (the QSO party aspect), to call attention to AM and AM transmitters, and to be all inclusive of any type of AM or AM-capable transmitting equipment.  There are many categories of equipment which are specifically created to highlight the many types of AM equipment in use today.

Hope this helps :-)

Just wondering if it might make sense to open the event for a two-day period, rather than limiting it to 20 hours.  It seems that several people were unable to participate due to work hours or travel.  Since it is not really a contest, per-se, perhaps a longer open period might enable even more participation and favorable exposure for the AM mode.   This might also allow for more contacts depending on propagation conditions if limited to a shorter period....    Just thinking out loud...
