Title: No receive audio on Drake TR-4Cw
Post by: pintopete on December 20, 2010, 07:45:29 PM
I have no receive audio on my TR-4Cw after repairing a short in the T2 coil where the capacitor legs pass by the chassis. I found a good used T2 coil, replaced it, re-connected everything put it all back together. When the T2 coil shorted it cooked the R2 resistor which I also replaced. There was one other capacitor, C136, in the board 5 that had only one leg attached. I fixed it and also replaced the mic socket back to the original .204 socket.  Now....no receive audio. I get very little noise out of the speaker and the noises seem to change a bit after different power on - off cycles. About the only thing that will create any noise is by turning the RF tune control but it is loudest at 5 (middle of range). The VFO does not change the noise much except in one location but there are no typlical on air sounds or stations heard.  When switching the band selector the noise gets louder at 14mhz to the point of a too loud feedback type noise.  I tried tx quickly and that seemed positive. Prior to the short (and my repairs) it did receive well.  The sideband selector makes no real difference.  I followed the schematic and pictures and I am fairly confident of my work and repairs.  This radio also has the typical AM filter modification that was somewhat popular but was in place prior to the described issues.  Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Peter.

Take voltage measurements around the associated tubes. There should be voltage charts per tube in the manual.
