Amateur radio was a rage back in those days. Every young boy was talking about Ham radio and wanted to build something to get on the air. Sounds like a posting right off QRZ.com. ;D I recall an old World Book Encyclopaedia (remember those?) entry about amateur radio, circa 1950. It said something to the effect that ham operators were "mostly boys and young men".
