Title: Jupiter!
Post by: Bill, KD0HG on October 20, 2010, 10:58:18 PM
Quite cool. Tremendous view, even with a full moon nearby.

Using Nikon 10X35 binocs, I could clearly see two of its moons to the left of the disk and one moon to its right tonight. Just pinpricks of light, but the moons were clearly there. Io, Europa, Callisto and Ganymede.

Check the show out if you have binocs, you don't need a fancy telescope, and what you see is 40-odd light-minutes away.

Now swing over and see Comet 103p/Hartley 2
Neat little green fuzzball.

Jupiter is getting further away now... but was fantastic the last 2 months.

That photo is exactly how it appeared to me when I saw Jupiter years ago, Bill. Was using a 450x Newtonian Reflector with mediocre optics, saw 5 of the 9 moons and could see the color bands and spot, though very fuzzy.

Good stuff, and a reason to dig the 'scope out again.

Todd, maybe you meant 5 of the 63 moons.....

4 are usually readily visible.

(maybe there were only 9 confirmed "years ago" when you saw them)   ;D

Really not happy with all the cloudy nights we've been having...
Was SO looking forward to getting pictures of Hartley 2.
Looks like it won't happen though.
Clouds here for the next week are forecast.
Yesterday was it's closest approach at 11 million miles.

And the newly discovered comet that is heading right into the sun for a quick demise, well, obviously us mere mortals without orbiting telescopes won't get to peek at that.

Oh well, Saturn and Mars will come back into view in a month or two..........
