Title: Drake R4-Bs receiver
Post by: iw5ci on August 12, 2010, 08:20:04 AM
I have put my hands on a R4-B(s!) receiver:

I have searched on the web for this unusual version. It appears to be a R4-B
with R4-C vfo and other little improovements.
Can Anyone tell me more about this Radio?

The Bama manual is just a standard R4B manual.  What you have is someoone's custom job.  There won't be any manuals for this receiver unless they documented their work.  Looks interesting, though.  I'd be interested in knowing what else they did to it.

I think it's not a custom job. The front panel is original for shure. The S letter is just the same of other Drake letters and is just covered with red painting (in my radio color is a little faded) as for example R4-c CW...

there is also no sign of new soldering or mods.. this evening i had a mail of another ham who has another R4bs and he is still searching infos about this radio, but he told me that he bought the radio from the ham who has bought it new in the seventies ad he said it was a commercial version sold directly by drake reseller.

it's an interesting mystery!

here is the photo of my R4b on the right, and the R4bs on left they look the same except for the vfo.

the serial number of the bs is 19744 B

interesting...
in this page we have a database of drake serial numbers...

http://www.wb4hfn.com/DRAKE/DrakeSNDatabase-P2.htm (http://www.wb4hfn.com/DRAKE/DrakeSNDatabase-P2.htm)

we can see that the last record of r4b is 15936 and the first r4c is 16834
the copper chassis of my r4bs is 19744 so is build later than the first R4c !!
