Heh, as you said yesterday Brent, "Keep that saw IN FRONT of you, never bring it across your body!" That looks much nastier than what you described. I would recommend that you be excused from all household chores for at least 2 weeks.

Wow, nasty, OM. When you first sliced your knee, you must have freaked out, thinking it was more serious. I'm surprised more guys don't hack themselves up considering how much Johnny Novice sawing goes on these days.

The moral:  If you're gonna be a swinging dick with a chain saw, don't wear crotchless chaps!   ;D

If the truth be known, Colleen probably whacked him with a meat cleaver because she was getting tired of bitching at him to do the dishes. ;D  ;D

I have a much smaller version of that scar, just a little bite as the saw was about to stop. It was a pretty gentle wake-up call considering what it might have been.

And "Always wear CHAPS!!" is pretty good fashion advise too.  :)

Wow.  I heard you talking about that on the air.  Looks much worse in living color.

Chain saw cuts are nasty, they don't slice, they scoop out 1/4 inch thick hunks of meat, bone and what ever else is in the way.

Luckily it was just your leg and not across a really IMPORTANT appendage... :o

Kevelar chaps and a steel CUP?

All kidding aside, glad it wasn't any worse OM.  Locally there was a fella killed I think a month ago.  He got kicked back across the neck/chest.  Lived long enough to call 911 but by the time they got there he'd bled out.

You should have someone around when doing things that can kill you to keep an eye on things. As we get older we tend to get sloppy.

Nice. Did your patella get gouged as well? Hope not. If it did, it's gonna make you really bad at hopscotch. I whacked a knee, but I had to do it dumping a motorcycle at 40 mph. Hang in there and take care of it. Tell the doc you need pain meds. Even if you don't, they could come in handy some Saturday night when the bands are crappy. Hope ya heal up fast, sonny.

No I didn't freak out, but knew I sliced it when I caught the pants coming back from a small branch cut. I nicked the bone on the knee cap. I opened up the hole in my pants and peered into the 1/2 deep inch gash; shut the saw off and walked back to the house in disgust..changed into short cause I knew they where going to hack the pant leg off and drove to Parkland.

Brent,

Hope you took the rest of the day off from doing any other dangerous type work.  Maybe just read a book, but watch out for those paper cuts ;D.

That cut looks bad enough.

Hope you're feeling OK and your leg is on the mend.

Glad it wasn't worse there.
I had an O' sh*t moment a couple wks ago while dropping a tree and stripping it. I yelled at my self out loud. I'm going to invest in chaps. ( W/ crotch....)

A close call for the lady below, note damage to leather.

Brent,
Your a lucky guy that it was not worse than it was.  I use a chain saw around here quite often and try to be extremely careful.  Yours is the second chain saw accident I have heard about in a week.  Another local ham got the chain saw across his wrist and its a nasty cut.  They tell him he will be fine, but quite a bit of recovery.
Good luck with the healing process.
Best Wishes,
Joe, W3GMS

All kidding aside from my earlier post. A chain saw, high voltage, and motorcycles all have the same thing in common. They are nasty bastards that have NO respect for you!!

You have got to respect them, cause they will try to get you any time they can. No matter how comfortable or complacent you feel with them, they'll try to get ya anytime they can.

(but I'd still hide the meat cleaver from Colleen)

If you got some of the bone, that thing is gonna come back to haunt you later down the road. (Just ask me, been there done that)

Get well and LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR DOCTOR SEZ! ! ! !

I think you are trying to become a total bionic man.

Take care.

One of the tree climbers I work with got cut like that--- in the forehead, while he was in the tree.

I grew up in the logging industry and my dad made sure to burn certain things into my brain. Like always stand to the side in case of kick back, never cut towards your feet, so on and so forth. We used to get pretty crazy with even larger saws felling and limbing trees with unbelievable speed. It seemed like a race to get the log tuck loaded, but we never had any accidents or got cut, and for that we were probably very fortunate.

When my grandfather died, cleaning out the machine shed yielded a 2-man chainsaw similar to this one (but larger, as I remember).  Gave me the heebie-jeebies just looking at it.

I had a twin cylinder saw with a 6 ft bar for a while. Don't remember who made it. It had my utmost respect and attention.
ALWAYS think first and plan all cuts so you are not in the way of the chain.

As I recall my grandpa's old chainsaw had what looked like a large outboard motor for power, and dual handles on the motor end.

I do remember it was tough enough for my cousin and me to lift the damn thing, I couldn't imagine running it.

Brent,

This is the chainsaw I was telling you about that my daughter used when she was on the Gila Hotshot crew with the U.S. Forest Service. She is 5'3" tall, and if the saw was held vertically from the ground up it would nearly touch her chin. I have no idea how long that bar is, but it's much bigger than the one I use around here!

Keep healing up and ttyl on those quiet frequencies near 3700.
