Title: Testing very old Western Electric tubes!
Post by: N2IDU on May 18, 2010, 01:50:08 PM
I have been unable to locate a way to test the following Western Electric tubes:

(1)  350B probably similar to a 6L6 but not sure.
(2)  WE 101D ( tennis ball type for audio).

I have three different tube testers with the best being a 539B Hickok. None of tube data with any of the testers even list them. The Hickok even comes with an "obsolete" tube testing chart, but to no avail. I have attempted to cross reference them with the 3 or 4 tube substitution books that I have on hand as well, but no luck. I've had no luck with the internet either.

Somebody out there must have the answer as these tubes are highly sought after by the collectors etc??

Thanks,
Peter N2IDU Old Shincracker, Vt.

The only tester I have is a Philco 9200.

It's a simple emissions tester, but it does have 350B listed.

It also has 101F (without the WE prefix).

Attached is the suplimental settings chart for it.

It also has a roll with more common tube settings and I would be happy to read something off it for you.

Perhaps you can figure something out from this info.

You can test the 350B as a 6L6 type, they are practically interchangeable except for the value $$$.  ;)

The 101- series is a simple low-mu triode, you can run it as a 2A3 and get an idea about it.

The UY type base on them used a bottom contact rather than a side contact as on the UX base, so it will rattle around in your socket and you may need to go to clip leads to set it up.

I have a Hickock 800A tester.

If you can find a setting for them, this tester can test it.

Thanks for the input. I believe I can test them now with the info you provided.
