Title: 40M nice this weekend
Post by: WA3VJB on April 04, 2010, 12:11:35 PM
Worked a new guy who actually is returning to AM after many years gone.

Nick, W4TZQ is on a TenTec from Ashville and was worried about how a "modern" rig would sound.  I sent him this sound file.

He need not worry.

(the peak distortion was my fault -- not riding the gain close enough)

Go figure Paul!  After I made changes and only have a resonant dipole for the 80 meter AM window now.... I may have to parallel a 40 meter off the same feedline soon.

I called CQ on 7160 yesterday for about an hour and never got a taker.  There was little activity on the band.  Either condx were bad or most hams were occupied with family on account of the holiday.  I at least got to shake out my gear and get it all humming for a summer on 40 m.

You need to get one of those newfangled CQ callers like KYV has. Just put the thing on auto pilot and go to Walmart shopping, when you come back, you'll have a lot of fish on the line.

The daytime activity was very low on Easter Sunday.  When I still had my G5RV up (a good performer on 40 and 20) through March I was on 40 a whole lot.  My recent increase in power from the Henry amp scorched the 80 meter area of the roller inductor on the cheaply MFJ.  It was okay on 40 so I did quite a bit of calling and got quite a few hits up on 7290 7293 and 7295.... only a few takers on 7160 and that weekend afternoons when a group around texas, la, ark and miss actually run AM there on weekends.... Don, KYV was on once and we had a nice hour long chat after the others signed off.

Next weekend, I think I will attempt to hang that parallel 40 meter under the 80 on the same feed.   My arrangement is only 30 feet at the center and 20 feet where the ends of the dipole are.  All three points are on pulleys now making it easy to change things.

Any ideas on the best things to use for "spreaders" between the "fan blades (different dipoles)"??  Will PVC handle legal limit?  (I can get 350 watts carrier if I drive the Henry with 25 watts and that is the continuous duty rating of the amp, although my Dixie 60 doesn't dead key 25 watts, more like 15 watts so I get 200 to 250 watts carrier with it)
