Title: Icom IC-706 and FL-102 IF Filter?
Post by: kd7ugy on January 13, 2010, 05:33:26 PM
I purchased a FL-102 6khz AM filter for my IC-706 then realized that particular filter isn't supported in the IF filter selection programing in my IC-706. Does anybody know if there anyway I can make this filter work on my IC-706 to improve the receive of this radio on AM or am I out of luck?

Poked around a bit,  did recall that Bill, KE1GF did some massaging on 706s,  however,  think that they were MK IIG's.  He did note that the FL 102 was used ... more here:

The link in Bills original post seems broken ... he may have that data somewhere else,  or perhaps could send it to you,  if you need it.

Check with Bill (KE1GF) on Skype...

His Skype contact name is   "ke1gflabs"

Of course, drop the quotes

I got good results putting in the 2.8k SSB filter.  When you select AM-N, that filter is selected and sounds much better than the barn-door stock 6k filter.

Is this mod for the ICOM707MKIIG or earlier models.

I have been trying to get better selectivity in the receiver and better audio from the transmitter of the MKIIG but I am not sure it's capable due to it's inherent design.

I know that this is a very old post, but the FL-102 can be used in a 706M2G with slight modification.  I hv the filter in two of mine and it wrks flawlessly with sharp skirts.

73's, I hpe that this is helpful.

With apologies to the literary world.  You can clean up a pig, put a ribbon on it's tail, spray it with perfume, but it is still a pig.   8)

I did this mod many moons ago and it made my 706MK2G much more useful on am. The stock setup uses an FM filter unless you engage the Narrow filter option (when it uses the SSB filter which is too narrow), and that filter is about 25 khz wide by my measurement on my radio. I'd hear every AM qso around the window at the same time, plus all the nearby slopbuckets. The FL102 narrowed that right down to 6 khz an it's a whole new radio for AM since. YMMV
