On which band would it carry further under current atmospheric conditions? 40m or 80m?

Reason - until the tubes arrive for the modulator of my 100W Xmitr, I have to make do with a small 1W rig I put together.

Great antenna; either band. On CW and a decent antenna, you can work the world with milliwatts of power on 80 and 40.

I have a lousy antenna (and no room to improve upon it) so 1 watt isn't cutting it in evenings.

What is the best time for 40m? I ask because by 8pm EST there's an awful lot of noise (80m is much worse here though, barely anything gets through on 80).

Maybe if I can try 40m again during less noisy hours, I might make a contact.

that's double tough. QRPp and a poor antenna = much frustration. 
I'd stick to 40M under those conditions.
you might try announcing a sched transmit time here and seeing who can hear you. If we know to look for a sig there is a chance someone on the board may hear it.

Ok, I'll try again tonight around 8 pm on 7290, see if I can raise any contacts with just 1 watt.

7.290 Mhz as soon as the sun is about to set till after it rises is wiped out by a Broadcast station.  No way I could pick up a 1 watt signal with such a beast riding on top of it.

Maybe you should consider finding an open frequency below 7.200 and then posting it here.

I'll fire up the shortwave and see if there's any vacant spots between 7.0 and 7.3, see if I can raise anything (though it's highly doubtful).
