Title: Any Trekkies out there?
Post by: WB2YGF on May 07, 2009, 10:01:37 PM
I consider myself a moderate Star Trek fan.  I don't remember the last time I went to the movies, but this new Star Trek looks like a winner.  The director is hailed as the next Speilberg and the movie is getting rave reviews.

I have tickets to an IMAX showing on Sunday.  I can't wait.  :)

I'm going to catch the movie Saturday for the discount matinee price.  Too bad my girlfriend isn't a Trekkie, she has a big purse to smuggle in the goodies.  The goodies cost too much at the theatre.  Guess I'll have to splurge for a little popcorn.  I love my Dolby 5.1 Home Theatre but this one I got to see on the Big Screen.

Live long and prosper!

I know what you mean.   My wife wouldn't speak to me if I didn't spend $10 on popcorn and soda. (It's probably $15 now.)  She likes Star Trek, but wonders why it's the only movies I take her to.  ;D

We used to sneak in a pocket size bottle of booze and go to the concession stand, get large drinks, and go to the restroom, pour some out, and replace with booze. also used to bring own candy or a sandwich, but always bought the large size popcorn bucket at the establishment. It's funny, you literally have to sneak the external food in. If they didn't charge $4 for a hot dog, it would be unneccessary.

I'm not the Trekkie of sci-fi conventions, but have always loved the series, especially Star Trek: TNG. Have a lot of the original series on streaky videotape. I'm looking forward to seeing the new movie when I get back in August. I'm currently searching for slack in South Korea;)

Our local theater now serves Daquiris for your viewing pleasure.  Sure wish they served draught beer!

I have never been at the theatre I am going to.  It's a 24 screen behemoth with a 3D IMAX.  (Unfortunately, Star Trek is not in 3D.)

The matinee starts in an hour.... but it's on 5 screens and I can pick a start time every 15 minutes thereafter!   ;D  No one answering my AM CQs right now on 7.160 so maybe I should just go!  So many things... so little weekend.

What, you mean it is just a movie, and all these years I thought it was real.  :(

Live long and prosper.

A Star Trek from the days of black and white TV in my parent's basement.
Favorite episodes:

A Piece of the Action - early 1990s Chicago gangsters (before the days of "gangstas", when folks had sartorial style and class)

City on the Edge of Forever - Elizabeth Taylor at her very best

Dr. Who was much better. Star Trek was late to the party.

Saw Trek this afternoon with the wife and our two teens.

I'll give it a thumbs up. They used the old cliches sparingly and it was thoroughly entertaining.

I'm glad they gave Leonard Nimoy a real part rather than just a cameo.

3-1/2 stars on the HG-O-Meter.

Steve, the best part of Dr. Who was Billie Piper.

Didja ever like Red Dwarf?

(Sick as I am, I thought the Red Green show was a hoot, too)

Never got into Red Dwarf. It was always on late at night on the PBS station. I guess I could get it DVD or DL of the Net now.

Great flick.  Thoroughly enjoyed it, and the YL was thrilled as well. Already looking forward to the next two sequels.  :)

I was kind of disappointed that what I thought was going to be IMAX (as in the original IMAX Dome format) was, in fact, just a digital HD version of the regular film.  If you ask me, it's false advertising to slap the IMAX logo on something that's really not.  That said, for a few bucks extra, I think it was probably still worth it.

Oh...and the large popcorn and drink was $11.50, a little lower than my prediction.   ;)

Smuggled in peanut brittle and a bottle of water. :o

The movie was lots of fun. I'd stop short of calling myself a trekkie but I'm a big fan.

I must say however, I hate time travel plots. Time travel gives the writers endless storyline possibilites but gives me an endless headache.

Real Imax is 70mm film running horizontally, each frame having 15 perforations.  I also don't understand how than can slap the "Imax" name on a photographic blow up of a vertically running 35mm (4 perfs/frame) film.  (even if it's scope and compressed 2:1 vertically in the campea negative)  Or if the film was shot in digital, the current resulution Hollywood uses is about equavalent to 35mm film. Come on --- pixels are pixels and when they get bigger you can see them.

Star Trek was shot in anamorphic format on 35 mm film (not HD digital).  For IMAX, the movie is digitally upconverted and printed on 70 mm film with a proprietary process that makes it sharper, removes film grain, corrects color balance, etc (so they say).  The theater I went to, had the digital DLP dual projectors which I hear are not as good as the analog 70 mm projectors, but then the DLP's can do 3D.  The 12 kW of surround sound is also a plus over regular screens.  (The IMAX screen has thousands of holes so sound actually comes out of the screen.)

Thanks Jeff. :)

I just went to see Star Trek with my xyl last night.  I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!  It was the most fun I have had at the movies in a long time.

99.99% of the time I go to a movie, it's one my wife wants to see.  She was a real trooper to go to this one (and even use her two gift certificate movie tickets she received as a present).

At least she stayed awake.  Years ago as newly weds I took her to a James Bond movie and she fell asleep.

I'm going to see it tonight with a few neighbors. Hope it's better than this William Shatner impressionistic attempt at singing Harry Chapin's "Taxi".

(He really gets cranked up at 2:20 minutes in if you can stand it. Harry Chapin must be rolling over in his grave...)

Loved the BarakSpock!

The movie was really enjoyable. I wasn't quite sure what to expect given the fact that this was another J.J. Abrams event, meaning it would either be a huge failure or an excellent production, but in my opinion he did it right. I was amazed at how accurately the main cast portrayed the characters from the old TV show, right down to their most subtle mannerisms. The audience burst out laughing quite a few times when old lines from the series showed up in the script.

The dynamic range of the sound system in the theater was put to the test with some of the special effects, but I didn't detect any clipping or distortion. My wife insisted on wearing ear plugs, probably a good thing if you don't like it loud.

I'm pretty sure I caught a glimpse of Mr. Vu ripping out some Behringer equipment and installing a Symetrix 528E with balanced lines into the audio chain of the Enterprise communications system. Couldn't confirm that 100% though.

The viewer rating at IMDB is sitting at 8.5 out of 10 which is an impressive score. Even the popcorn was good!
